Reference: Gideon [1901:693-4]: "John C. Parker is a native of Kentucky, his birth having occurred in that state on the 14th of July, 1854. He is now extensively and successfully engaged in agricultural pursuits in Kiamichi county of the Choctaw nation. He represents an old and well-known family of the south , his paternal grandfather being John Parker, who was born in Virginia and emigrated to Kentucky in the pioneer days of that commonwealth, there spending the remainder of his days. John Parker, the father of our subject, was born in Kentucky, and after arriving at years of maturity married Melvina Hudson who was born in Tennessee and died in Dallas, Texas, removing to the Lone Star state with an uncle. Her husband died when the subject of this review was only six years of age, but the latter did not come to the west until after he had attained to man's estate. His education was acquired in the public schools of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, and in Franklin College, of Springfield, that state, pursuing his studies in the latter institution for two years. He was reared to agricultural pursuits and has always followed farming and stock-raising. After putting aside his text-books he began dealing in stock and trading in other lines. In 1876 he came to the territory, locating first in the Cherokee nation, in the vicinity of Fort Gibson, where he resided for about a year. Since that time he has been a resident of the Choctaw nation, and he now owns five hundred acres of very valuable and productive land under cultivation, situated between Hamden and Nelson, in Kiamichi county. He raises stock on an extensive scale, and the products of his farm find a ready sale on the marker. His home is pleasantly situated about nine miles southwest of Antlers.
     "Mr. Parker was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Willis, a daughter of Britt Willis, who was born in the Choctaw nation and was only about one-sixteenth Choctaw. Her death occurred in 1898. The marriage was blessed with five children, - Gabe, James W., Lulu, Cora and George. The eldest son is a splendid young man and was graduated in Kendall College, at Muskogee, being now principal of the Armstrong Academy at Academy. Mr. Parker holds membership in the Methodist Episcopal church, to which his wife also belonged. He is identified with the Knights of Pythias fraternity, and has held some minor offices, having been election clerk in the county and also school trustee. It is not because of special prominence in public affairs that he has, and is justly entitled to , the respect and confidence of his fellow men, for his personal qualities are such as to make men esteem an honor him." in 1901 at Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory (now OK), USA.¹³

Thomas Pratt Jr. died before 23 January 1838 at Warren Co., Missouri, USA; The death date of 23 Jan 1838 was given to me by Ron Brown. However, it appears that Thomas died some time before this. There exists a probate document dated 23 Jan 1838 for the administration of Thomas's will implying that Thomas was already dead by this date. He apparently died intestate. His widow, Martha, and his son, Jonathan, were appointed administrators of his estate. GA Vaut.^3,16

per Joan Hackett (22 Apr 1994): "According to one of the Sparacio abstracts I have of Culpeper Co., VA, Deeds 1783-85, a Thomas PRATT was at one time located in Brumfield Parish at the fork of the Rush River. This property was granted to William MENIFEE by Patent 28 Nov 1749 and subsequently sold to Thomas PRATT (no date listed) and then sold by PRATT to Jason THOMAS, who 16 May 1785, sold it to George DYKE."

per Joan Hackett (22 Apr 1994): "In Joyner's Abstracts of Culpeper Co., VA, warrants and surveys:
Thomas PRATT, assignee of Jonathan PRATT; 20 Aug 1759 (warrant); 11 Jun 1760 (survey); both in name of Jonathan PRATT. 216 a. on brs of Hugh River on side of fork mt.
Thomas PRATT was one of the chain carriers, which implies he was probably young and strong, since the surveyor's chains were heavy.
There is another reference to Thomas PRATT in this same book in 1776 Isaac CAMPBELL was assignee of Thomas PRATT, assigne of William MINNIFIELD/MENAFEE."^{3,18,19,20,21,22,23} He was a mentioned with Ann/Anna Pratt at Citation; Bryan & Rose [1873:222] state the Thomas and Elizabeth (SMITH) PRATT had a daughter named Ann. It is not clear that this is the same Ann PRATT who married David HUDSON in 1820, though the dates work:

Thomas Pratt, 1740-1814
This son of Jonathan Pratt (1714), probably his eldest, was born c. 1740, probably in Orange County, Virginia. Married Mary Ann, and died c. 1814 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He was probably married in the early 1760s, and appears in several transactions of land in Culpeper and Madison Counties. He lived in Culpeper at the time of his death, but the original tract of land which he inherited from his father was in Madison, created from Culpeper in 1792.
Distribution of his estate, dated 1815, is found in Will Book 1, page 43, in which his heirs are mentioned by name. His wife is not mentioned in the distribution, and is presumed to have either predcceased her husband, or to have received her one-third dower prior to distribution of the remainder. This may be the same Thomas Pratt shown as head of household in the 1810 census of the county. The family included one male over 45 years (Thomas); one male 26 to 45; one male under 10; one female 26 to 45 (perhaps Mary Ann): and eleven slaves. Their children, all born in Culpeper County, Virginia, included:
1.     Elizabeth, born c. 1762; died c. 1807 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. Married c. 1782 in Culpeper County, Virginia, to James Graves.
2.     Josiah, born e. 1764; died before December 28, 1827 in Cu!-peper County, Virginia. Married there December 16, 1789 to Mary Beckham,
3.     Susannah.
4.     Thomas, Jr., married first January 7, 1796 to Elizabeth Smith and second December 2, 1812 to Martha (Patsy) Terrll, both in Culpeper County, Virginia. He moved to Warren County, Missouri, and probably died there. It is interesting to note that Henry Thompson Pratt (1861), a half-brother of the author's mother, spent the last part of his life in Warrensburg, Missouri where he is buried.
5.     Jonathan, married in Culpeper County on February 5, 1803 to Hannah Roberts; and died c. 1815 in Madison County.
6.     Jane; married in Culpeper County March 4. 1800 to Briscoe Smith; and died before 18 15. At least one daughter:
a. Mary Ann.
7.     Jesse; married in Culpeper County, February 24, 1813 Milley Johnson, and died late in 1818.

Four PRATT households appear on two consecutive pages of the 1810 federal census of Culpeper County, Virginia: Thomas Sr., Thomas, Jr., John/Jonathan ("Jno") and Isaiah PRATT. The order of enumeration in the 1810 census seems to be more or less alphabetical and does not necessarily imply geographical proximity pf the households. According to the census listings:
     Isaiah was born 1766-1791 (age 26-44).
     Thomas, Jr. was born in or before 1765 (age 45+)
     Thomas Sr. was born in or before 1765 - age 45+ (actually born ca 1740)
     Jno was also born in or before 1765 (age 45+)
The relationships, if any, between the four are mostly unresolved. Two are father and son (Thomas Sr. and Jr.) Jno could have been the brother of Thomas Sr. (though he was reportedly dead bef March 1802), or an older son. Isaiah could have been a son of either Thomas Sr. or of Jno, or it is possible that this was a record for Josiah Pratt, son of Thomas, Sr. and was mis-reported as "Isaiah".)      "First it is my will that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be paid fully.

Henderson Poe (b. Nov. 17, 1842, d. Nov. 8, 1904) married Nancy Elizabeth Vaut (b. Oct. 1848, d. Sept. 29, 1928), daughter of Andrew Vaut, and step-daughter of Jacob Boydston who was an early settler of Dallas County, homesteading in Cedar Hill, then known as Cedar mountains. The date of this marriage is unknown. He and Nancy continued to remain at his parental home. He farmed and raisec livestock. In 1892, he and A.J. Dukes went into the hardware business Henderson "Hence" Poe raised tho-roughbreds for racing. Some debt or other was settled between Hence and A.J. Dukes by his giving A.J. some race horses. A.J.'s son Leonidas took them to St. Louis to market them but never returned with the money. Leonidas had met up with some men and one or more of his mother's brothers, and they managed to blow all the money before they got home.
William Poe, Henderson's father, in his later years traded away 149 and ½ acres of the So. W. survey of the Poe homestead to H.R. and Fannie Sharp on May 1, 1885. This did not please Henderson and he was able to even-tually buy back the land approximately two years later. Nelmwood Estates now occupies a portion of the old Poe homestead. Henderson was half owner of the State Bank of Mansfield. He was in the hardware business with A.J. Dukes, establishing a store on Main St. He was an accomplished fiddler, and hunter. He was invited into the Ma-sonic Lodge #331 in Mansfield, January 1870 and made a master Mason in 1871. Henderson helped in the construction of the Masonic Lodge on Main Street. He was so loved and respected at the lodge that at his death the lodge was draped in mourning, and all the members wore a badge of mourning for thirty days. A page of the Masonic record was dedi-cated to his memory. Hence attended the Confederate Veterans reunion in Ft. Worth in his later years, date un-known. He participated in an old fid-dlers contest April 13, 1901. November 21, 1902 a fire destroyed the Hender-son's home that stood four miles north
of Mansfield on Hwy. 157. "Just at noon a heavy volume of smoke was noticed rising north of town, and it only took a short while with a good field glass to locate the fire as being the farm house of Mr. Poe's. Henderson and his son Will, were both away from home, and the only persons about were the two Mistress Poe's," (Nancy and Maggie) wrote the Mansfield News Mirror. The fire which started from a defective flue in the kitchen was discovered while it had yet made but little headway, but the ladies had no means of extinguishing it, and before effective help arrived on the scene, the pretty house was doomed. Mr. Poe had for years carried insurance on his house but had let the insurance expire only one year before, vowing that he was disgusted because the house would not burn. The loss was absolute except for his fiddle which was saved by his wife; it never even got scorched. However, he was inconsolable over the loss of his hunting horn. "By, George, the best'un I ever blowed", remorsed Mr. Poe. The property loss was some-thing over $2,500.00 and he vowed that no one could make a house and furni-ture that would just exactly fit him like that one." reported the Mansfield News Mirror.
Henderson. lived a life undirected by any of orthodox creeds or generally accepted rules of conduct; he was good hearted and honest. He had the love and respect of all classes of society. He recognized the need of the hour and was generous to those in need, with a loan, a helping hand or a sack of flour, when a widow's table was bare. Henderson and Nancy had a good marriage. In the 1860's settlers were few and far be-tween. A creek ran through the Poe land and many times during the rainy seasons the road to Mansfield would become impassable. The family would be cut off from friends and neighbors until the waters subsided.
There were four children born of the marriage of Henderson and Nancy:
Susan was born September 28, 1869 and died October 20, 1878 of scarlet fever.
William Silas was born July 30, 1871. When Will contacted scarlet fever he became very ill, and was not conscious much of the time. When he began to recover, he discovered that his two sisters, Mary Alice and Susan were already dead and buried.
Mary Alice was born June 24, 1875 and died October 20, 1878 of scarlet fever.
Mattie Lenora was born March 1, 1888 and died April 4, 1889. The cause of her death was pneumonia. Mattie had climbed up in a chair and pulled a scalding hot pot of coffee off of the table onto her tiny body and was severely burned. She developed pneumonia and
was not able to recover. The three girls are buried at Johnson Station ceme-tery.
Some time before Susan's death Oct. 28, 1878, Henderson won a 1852 gold dollar in a gambling game. He came home and found Susan and Will playing in the yard. Laura Hardgraves, a black woman was doing the Poe family laundry (the old fashioned way with a fire burning around a wash pot, rub boards and tubs) and she was also minding the children. Laura said that Henderson called Susan to him and gave her the 1952 gold dollar. Susan hurriedly took the coin to her mother, Nancy and gave it to her to put in a safe place. Laura reported that Will was very disappointed because his Dad did not give the coin to him instead of Susan. Susan died soon after this in-cident. Still Nancy kept the gold dollar among her keepsakes until 1902 when the house was destroyed by fire. A new house was erected on the same foun-dation, with no underpinning. Many years later Sue Poe, granddaughter of Henderson was playing under the house and picked up a shiny object. Not knowing what it was, she went inside the house to show it to her mother. Maggie checked it over and found it to be an 1852 gold dollar. After much ju-bilation, Nancy, Sue's grandmother then gave the coin to Maggie to keep for Sue. Sue always treasured the coin and kept it until her death. It was dated the same year that her grandmother, Sue Broiles Erwin, was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee.
Henderson Poe died Nov. 8, 1904. Henderson's grandson and namesake, Hence, went to Dallas in a wagon to get him a tombstone. It is still standing at the head of his grave at Johnson Station Cemetery, Arlington, Texas.
Nancy Vaut Poe was born Oct. 1848 and died Sept. 29, 1928. It is told that she wrote poetry. One of her poems was printed in the Mansfield News in 1928. Nanny Poe had been suffering from a lengthy illness and lay dying, around 8:58 on the morning of September 29, 1928, the day of her death. W.B. Hawkins, Jr., who was the Methodist preacher in Mansfield just happened to be passing by in a wagon and dropped in to see Nannie. It so happened that her last breath was leaving her body at that very moment. "it was a comfort to have him with us in our sorrowful hour", wrote Maggie Poe, daughter-in-law, in the pages of the family bible, "salvation open to all believers". Nancy Poe is buried at Johnson Station Cemetery.
