John grew up in England, at Trverham, a village 6 miles northwest of Norwich, the cathedral city and administrative center of Norfolk. He probably emigrated to Virginia around 1662 when he was in his early 20s and lived with his uncle, who treated him as a surrogate son.
Anne Orthwood, a servant of Lt. Col. William Waters, gave birth to twins and died in childbirth declaring them to be the children of John Kendall.2,3
