Per MilesFiles: "It has been suggested that the John Baker in William Epes' Muster in 1624/5 on the Eastern Shore was the father of all the early Bakers on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. However, there is no direct proof of this. Three of these Bakers: Daniel, Edward and Susanna are proven siblings. However, Daniel, having been named as an appraiser of an estate in 1640, would probably have been of age to have been given that responsibility, putting his birth before 1620 and making him too old to have been a son of John Baker, who was born 1605."2

Gender     Male
Will     20 Aug 1681      Northampton County, Virginia, USA [1]
He signed his will Walter (M) Mathews, his M mark. To my son John Mathews my gun. To my 5 children, viz: John, Sarah, Esther, Mary & Elizabeth Mathews cow and calf. If my loving wife Sarah Mathews should marry before any of my children are 18, then my son to be at age at 18 and my daughters at 16 or day of marriage. Remaining estate to my wife, but if my wife should die before her arrival her in Virginia, then all my estate to be equally divided by my 5 children. My friends Andrew Smaw and his wife and William Jarvis to oversee my estate until my wife's return. Witt: Capt. John Robins, Capt. Hancock Lee.

Death     Bef 21 Oct 1683      Northampton County, Virginia, USA [1]
It was on this date that his will was proved. The widow Sarah qualified as administratrix. (NOTE: Sarah Mathews and William Kendall Sr. entered into a marital agreement.)

Anecdote     1684      Northampton County, Virginia, USA [2]
Ralph Whitelaw and Lucy Ames Edwards both erroneously stated that William Kendall married Sarah, the widow of Henry Matthews. Henry Matthews' will of 19 Feb 1685, proved 26 Oct 1685 names no wife and children Ruth, Sarah, and Mary and Mary's sister Anne Winberrow dec'd. Walter Matthews will of 20 Aug 1681, proved 21 Oct 1683, names a wife Sarah Matthews and 5 children John, Sarah, Esther, Mary and Elizabeth. Since Lucy Ames Edwards states that the marriage agreement between Col. William Kendall and the widow Sarah Matthews was dated 6 Jun 1684, which was after Walter Matthews' will was proved and before Henry Matthews wrote his will, Sarah was obviously the widow of Walter Matthews.

In his 1658 will Fran Pott named dear friend and my entirely loved wife: Having taken a sudden resolution to go over the Bay about some urgent occasions and having travelled near 38 years to my long home, and knowing nothing to the contrary but that I may arrive there before my return to you again, and at this time I have not so much leisure as to make so formal a will and testament as I could desire. Therefore dear friend you must rest content with this, viz. (NOTE: Based on this statement he evidently first came to the Jamestown area circa 1620, about the same time as his brother Dr. John Pott.)

Biography     1629      James City County, Virginia, USA Find all individuals with events at this location [3]
Francis Pott, the brother of Dr. John Pott, came to Virginia sometime prior to March 1629 when Dr. Pott, who was then deputy-governor, appointed him captain of the fort at Old Point Comfort. He held that position until February 1633. In 1629 he received a bequest from Thomas Warnett, a Jamestown merchant. According to Secretary Richard Kemp, Francis Pott constantly tried to undermine Governor John Harvey and his policies. As a result, Harvey stripped him of his command in early 1635 and appointed a replacement, Captain Francis Hook. No doubt Francis Pott's loss of his lucrative position at Old Point Comfort fueled hostility toward Harvey. In April 1635 Francis Pott was instrumental in ousting Governor Harvey from office, and he was among those who accompanied him to England. Harvey quickly turned the tables, however, for he had Pott arrested and thrown into prison. Francis Pott petitioned the Privy Council for the right to post a bond so that he could get out of jail, and he claimed that Sir John Harvey owed him money. Although Pott was tried for attempting to depose the governor, he apologized and was released. By that time he had been detained in Fleet Prison for two years. When Dr. John Pott died (sometime after May 1635), his 12-acre lot in urban Jamestown and 500 acres in the Great Barren Neck near Middle Plantation descended to his brother, Francis, who seems to have retained the Jamestown property until at least August 1640. During the latter part of his life, Francis Pott moved to the Eastern Shore, where in 1647 he was living with his wife Susanna. He patented 2,000 acres in Northampton County in February 1653, and another 1,000 acres in 1657.

Francis Pott (sheriff of Accomack) complained to the court that whereas there are diverse orders, sequestrations and executions against the estate and person of Lt. Col. Edm. Where unto it can be found, that he may have any right, claim, or interest, and also warrant to require any master of ship, that they shall not transport the said Scarburgh forth of the contrary without license from the governor. Scarburgh stands suspected and accused for trading with Indians for guns, powder, shot (contrary to the known laws of the county) and to the great endangering the peace thereof, that you would inquire into those things (according to the power committed to your and your duty on that behalf) and return all such executions and proceedings as you shall make there in either concerning the aforesaid Scarburgh (or any other) to the governor and council at the next quarter court for which this shall by your sufficient warrant given under our hands. Per MilesFiles:
Whitelaw reports that Col. William Kendall left the 300 at Hungars lately purchased by me from Mr. John Bellamy whereon my son William Kendall now lives, to his wife Sarah Kendall for live and then to an unborn child. The will of William Kendall Sr. in Marshall's will book does not mention an unborn child, but Whitelaw states that Sarah had a son and named him William Kendall and thus there were 2 stepbrothers named William Kendall and they appeared in the records as William Kendall Sr. & William Kendall Jr. In 1718 the William Kendall Jr. (wife Tabitha) left the 300 acres at the 'bayside' where my fahter (meaning stepfather) Howson lives to his daughter Palmer Kendall. Nothing more was found of her and it is belived that the title passed to her brother John Kendall. When this younger William Kendall married Jane Parks in 1706 he was shown as the son of Col. William Kendall dec'd and his then step-father Samuel Palmer was the security.

Land - they gave land to someone     1 Aug 1685      tract N43, between Cheriton & Eastville, Northampton Co, Virginia Find all individuals with events at this location [17, 18]
In 1685 William Kendall gave 700 acres of this tract to his daughter Mary and her husband Hancock Lee, saying that it was where they were then living. They were to have a life interest, and then the land was entailed to their daughter Anna and her heirs. In his will of the next year, Kendall confirmed this gift and also left jointly to Mary Lee and a son William Kendall 60 acres and the "Tanne house." This was on the branch at the south and eventually became a part of the Lee Land. Not long afterwards the Lees moved across the bay where he is said to have built the first Ditchley. Anna Lee married William Armistead, whom she survived, and also a son John. In 1754 Anna and her grandson John Armistead petitioned the Assembly to have the entail docked for this land, which was granted and they sold to Littleton Eyre.
