The wife of Edmund Scarburgh was not Hannah Butler; her identification as "Butler" seems to come from a misinterpretation of the fact that Edmund Scarburgh claimed a "Robert Butler, servant" as a headright. Edmund Scarburgh's wife was Hannah Smith, daughter of the Rev. Edmund Smith (rector of Tenby, in Pembrokeshire; formerly headmaster of the Merchant Taylors' School in London) and Alice Barry. Hannah Smith's brother Edmund was physician in ordinary to Charles I (he was fined by the Committee for Compounding Delinquents under Cromwell as such, and during the English Civil War was in attendance on the king at Oxford), and was a close friend of William Harvey (who encouraged Charles Scarburgh, son of Edmund Scarburgh and Hannah, to "leave off thy gunning" and remain at Oxford to study).
