Daniel McDonald was born on 6 May 1833 at Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana, USA.1 He married Lydia Charlotte Armstrong, daughter of John Edward Armstrong and Charlotte Gaylord, circa 1859.1

Daniel McDonald died on 9 January 1916 at Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, USA, at age 82.1
Daniel McDonald was buried after 9 January 1916 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana, USA; From Find A Grave:
BIRTH     6 May 1833, Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana, USA
DEATH     9 Jan 1916 (aged 82), Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
Note: Daniel McDonald was the author of "A Twentieth Century History of Marshall County", published in 1908.
Daniel was the son of Thomas McDonald and Elizabeth Dickson, some of Plymouth’s earliest settlers, who married on 27 Jan 1831 in Fayette Co., Indiana. I found four children for the couple, but there may have been others—Daniel (6 May 1833 – 9 Jan 1916), Platt (5 Mar 1835 – 7 Mar 1921), Catharine (9 Nov 1837 – 6 Jun 1896), and John (26 Sep 1842 – 20 Sep 1871).
I found the family on the 1850 Census, living in Plymouth, Marshall, Indiana, where Daniel's father Thomas was farming for a living. Thomas eventually founded the Marshall County Democrat, a local newspaper.
Daniel married Lydia G. Armstrong circa 1859. They welcomed daughter Kittie in December of 1859 or January of 1860. The three of them appeared together on the 1860 Census, living in Plymouth, where Daniel was working as a telegraph operator.
By the 1870 Census, Daniel and Lydia had moved the family to nearby Bourbon, Marshall Co., Indiana. Daniel had found work as a railroad agent. On 16 Sep 1862, the couple had welcomed son Edgar to the family, and in 1865, son Louis joined the family. Sadly, Edgar died the following year on 23 Aug 1866 at age three.
When the 1880 enumeration was taken, Daniel and Lydia had moved back to Plymouth. Daniel was working as a printer, likely for his father's newspaper, The Marshall County Democrat. Another child arrived on 13 Feb 1874-son Donald. Sadly, he died later that year on 2 Sep 1874 when he was just over six months old.
Daniel's wife Lydia died the year after that census on 22 Sep 1881 at age 48.
On 30 Jun 1887, Daniel married Lillie Eliza Maria Brackett in Fulton Co., Indiana. They appeared together on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth. I couldn't decipher Daniel's occupation. Lillie (transcribed as Lette B.) reported that she had had one child who was still living.
They were still living in Plymouth when the next enumeration was taken in 1910. Daniel was earning a living as a newspaper editor. He died six years later on 9 Jan 1916 at age 82.
A biography of Daniel McDonald from the HISTORY OF MARSHALL COUNTY:
Mr. McDonald was born in Fayette County, Indiana, near Connersville, May 6, 1833, and came to Marshall County with his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth (Dickson) McDonald, locating in a log cabin in the wilderness near Lake Maxinkuckee. His school education was confined to a few terms in the log schoolhouses of the pioneer days, besides such education as he has received by experience. Early in his career he was telegraph operator and station agent, then was a bank cashier, and as a practical printer entered the newspaper field ad for thirty years editor and publisher of the Plymouth Democrat. For over eight years he was clerk of the Marshall circuit court, three times a member of the Plymouth School Board, and a member of the Indiana legislature during the regular and special sessions of 1869 and the regular sessions of 1905 and 1907. He was Democratic candidate for Congress from the Thirteenth district in 1880, a delegate to the Democratic national convention at St. Louis in 1876 and Chicago in 1884; and for several years member of the Democratic State Committee and chairman of the District Committee.
Mr. McDonald wrote the first history of Marshall County in 1881, and the present history in 1908; also wrote a history of Lake Maxinkuckee; a history of the removal of the Pottawatomie Indians from Northern Indiana, and the only history of Free Masonry in Indiana ever published. He is prominent in secret circles, having been grand master of Masons in Indiana, grand high priest of Royal Arch Masons, and Royal and Select Masters. He is a Knight Templar and thirty second degree Ancient and Scottish Rite Mason and past grand patron of the order of Eastern Star. He was also great sachem of the Improved Order of Red Men in 1872.
Mr. McDonald married Lydia C. Armstrong at Sterling, Illinois, December 31, 1857. Four children were born, one girl and three boys, all deceased except Louis, who married Miss Bertha K. Reynolds, November 19, 1891, and resides in Chicago. His oldest son, Edgar, was accidentally killed by falling from a wagon at Bourbon, Indiana. His wife Lydia died September 22, 1882. On June 30, 1887, Mr. McDonald married Lillie M. Brackett, at Rochester, Indiana. Mrs. McDonald is a native of Rock Island, Illinois. Their one child, James Brackett McDonald was born September 20, 1889, died in infancy. Mrs. McDonald's parents were Dr. James W. and Sarah (Brown) Brackett, of Rock Island.

1879 Obituary Harriet Brunson Obituary: Died, of congestive chills, at the residence of her son, in Fillmore City, Millard County, July 31st, 1879, MARRIET [sic], relict of Seymour Brunson. The daughter of Wm. H Gould and Hulda Gillmore. Born August 2nd, 1803, in Sector, Seneca County, N.Y. She was baptized by Hyrum Smith in 1831, and moved with her husband to Jackson County in 1836, being among those who suffered persecution at the hand of Missourians. They moved to Far West in 1838, and finally, with the rest of the Saints, left the state of Missouri in the year 1839 and moved to Quincy, Ils; finally --eating at Nauvoo, Hancock County, where her husband died in 1840. Seymour Brunson held the office of colonel in the Nauvoo Legion, and was a member of the High Council. He was buried with military honor.
In the year 1841, Sister Brunson was married to John Elmer. She had five children by her first husband and two by her second. They moved to Council Bluffs in 1846, and arrived in Salt Lake City in the fall of 1851. Since arriving in the valley of the mountain, she lived at Provo and Payson until Brother Elmer died, and has since resided with her son, Lewis Brunson in Fillmore.
There are but few now living who have passed through the same or similar trying scenes of persecution, privation and hardship, for the Gospel's sake, as has Sister Brunson. She had the satisfaction of going to the Temple of St George, and performing the ordinances for herself and for some of her dead friends, and has died in full faith of the Gospel and a firm hope of a glorious resurrection.      1888 Obituary Salt Lake City, Utah
Brunson- Louis Brunson, deceased, was born January 2th, 1831 in the town of Mantua, Portage County, Ohio; crossed the plains in 1851; was captain of a company and received the warmest thanks of those ever whom he presided. Arriving in Utah he settled in Provo, Utah County, but was soon called and set apart by President Geo A Smith to assist in forming a settlement on Chalk Creek, Millard County. When only 22 years old he was called and set apart by President B Young as Bishop of Fillmore, which position he held 6 years.
In 1861 he was released from his office as Bishop and called upon a mission in the United States. Returning from his mission he was called by the Church authorities to fill the important position of High Councilor and President of High Priests of Millard Stake, which later position he held at the time of his death.
Bro Brunson had the respect and esteem of all good men and women and the special love of those of his own faith who were acquainted with his sterling character. In every way he showed his love to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
He died January 4th 1888 from a combination of deseases mourned by a large family and by the entire community. His last days were full of suffering, which he bore with manly fortitude, and when enduring torture, spoke words of love and encouragement to his family. Deseret News, Feb 1, 1888, Page 16.

Another of Fillmore's oldest residents has passed to the Great Beyond, Mrs. Catherine Brunson, 81 years of age died here at the home of her son Mr. C A Brunson, on Wednesday of this week. Heart trouble is given as the cause of her death. Mrs. Brunson was a true member of the LDS Church and it is said of her that for a number of years she has not failed to attend Sunday School every Sunday. Mrs. Brunson was born in England [New York] and came to this country when a little girl. She has resided here in Fillmore for the better part of her life. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Jeannette Bishop of Hinckley and Mrs. Annie Hanson of Fillmore and the following sons, John, Charles, and William and Frank who died here recently.      1912 Obituary Fillmore, Utah - In Memoriam
Funeral services over the remains of Seymour Brunson were held in the Fillmore Ward Chapel on Sunday afternoon. The deceased had been a sufferer for years and it was a relief to him and all concerned when the Change came on Friday last week. The speakers were J V Robinson, Christian Anderson, F A Robinson and Bp. Brunson, who is a nephew of the deceased. Invocation was offered by F A Robinson and benediction by A Robinson. The choir sang three appropriate selections.
The deceased was the son of Seymour and Harriet Gould Brunson and was born in Illinois November 6, 1836. His parents were among the early converts to the Mormon Church and the father was a member of the High Council at Far West, Missouri and was the one who preferred the charges against Oliver Cowdery upon which he was tried and excommunicated. In consequence of persecutions and hardships in which he had shared with the saints, he died in Nauvoo and in a revelation given in 1841, where the members of the High Council of that stake of Zion are given, the word of the Lord is recorded as follows: Seymour Brunson I have taken unto myself, no man taketh his Priesthood, but another may be appointed unto the same Priesthood in his stead."
With his mother and step father and other members of the family, Seymour came to Utah, in the year 1852 and has had his home most of the time at Fillmore where he married Elizabeth A Mace and became the father of 11 children of which seven have preceeded him to the great beyond, 20 grand children and 6 great-grand children. The deceased was known in our community as a quiet unassuming, minding his own business, citizen. Millard Co. Progress Apr 12, 1912, Front page
Card Of Thanks. To our friends and relatives who so kindly showed their sympathy and help at the recent death of our father, Seymour Brunson, we extend our thanks--The Family.

Harriett Matilda Gould was buried after 31 July 1879 at Fillmore Cemetery, Fillmore, Millard Co., Utah, USA; From Find A Grave:
BIRTH     11 Aug 1801, Hector, Schuyler County, New York, USA
DEATH     31 Jul 1879 (aged 77), Fillmore, Millard County, Utah, USA
Daughter of William Gould & Huldah Gilmore
Married Seymour Brunson, abt 1823, Hector, Tompkins, New York
Children - Lewis Brunson, William Morgan Brunson, Rueben Brunson, Seymour Brunson, Joseph Brunson
Married John Elmer, 21 March 1841, Winter Quarters (now Florence), Douglas, Nebraska
Children - Jerusha Kibbee Elmer, Lucretia Elmer
History - Harriet Gould was born 11 August 1801 in Hector, Seneca County, New York. She was the second child in a family of twelve children born to William A. and Hulda Gilmore Gould. Her brothers were: George and Elisha, and her sisters were Polly, Mary, Sophia, Betsey, Naomie, Caroline, Sally Ann, Amanda and Elsie. All of these children were born in Hector, New York. Only part of them lived to maturity.
About 1824, when Harriet was 23 years old, she married Seymour Brunson. He was 26 at the time, having been born December 1, 1798 in Vermont. (One record says Sept 18, 1799 in Virginia. Another says he was born in New York State) His parents were Reuben Brunson and Sally Clark. Seymour and Harriet lived in Hector, New York, where their first child, Reuben, was born 20 March 1825.
In New York State at this time there was a great religious stir among the people; young Joseph Smith of Palmyra, New York, had organized the Church of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 1830 in Fayette, Seneca County, New York, not far from where the Brunsons lived.
Seymour and Harriet were deeply impressed with this new religion and Seymour was baptized soon after on 17 January 1831. However, it wasn't until March 1832 that Harriet was baptized.
According to Jensen's Church Chronology we read that "late in 1830 and 1831 the saints started moving from New York State to Kirtland Ohio." The Brunsons were willing to sacrifice everything for this new found religion, and they, too, moved to Ohio.
Their second child, Lewis, was born 27 January 1831 in Mantua, Portage County, Ohio. Joseph, their third child, was born 20 November 1834 in Bloomfield, Ohio, and Jershua about 1835 in Orenton, Vinton County, Ohio.
In 1831 the first Elders went to Jackson County, Missouri, and dedicated that place for the gathering of the Saints to build the New Jerusalem. From then on, thousands of Saints gathered there and underwent terrible persecutions from wicked mobs.
During the summer of 1836, Seymour, Harriet and their four children left Ohio to join the Mormons. The records show that they were in Tompkins, Illinois in November 22 of that year, because their fifth child, Seymour Jr. was born there on the 8th of November, 1836.
Books on early Church History tell of the prominent part Seymour Brunson played in the building up of Far West, Caldwell County, Missouri, where they had moved in the spring of 1837. However, the Mormons were not to enjoy peace at this time and place. One can hardly imagine the terrible things that the Mormon haters did to these defenseless Saints. Harriet Brunson lived in constant fear, not knowing at what time they might be killed. Finally, in October 1838 Governor Boggs issued his famous extermination order, which gave the Saints the choice between banishment from Missouri or death.
Again referring to Church Chronology, p. 16 it is noted that after the Saints had been banished from Missouri, they made their escape to Quincy (Commerce), Hancock County, Illinois. Here the citizens treated them kindly and the place was selected as a new gathering place for the Saints. The Prophet purchased a large acreage of swamp land on the banks of the Mississippi River to build a new place (Nauvoo) to live. The Brunsons are in Quincy (Commerce) early in the year of 1839, because their sixth child, William Morgan, was born there 3 March 1839.
The Brunsons were right there to help when this community was enlarged and incorporated into the City of Nauvoo. On page 17 Church Chronology we note that at the October General Conference Seymour Brunson was one of the men chosen and set apart as a High Councilman, with William Marks as Stake President. Harriet was proud that her husband was worthy of such an important church position. He also acted as body guard for their beloved Prophet Joseph Smith, whose life was in constant danger.
Then the grim reaper "Death" visited the Brunson household and took the husband and father, Seymour, and 10 June, 1840. [Correction: 10 August 1840] He was only 41 years old, and Harriet and the children needed him so badly. Joseph Smith delivered the funeral oration, and it was in this sermon that he first gave to the Church the revelation of the baptism for the dead that he had just received. (Note: Church Chronology says that in November 1841 baptisms for the dead were commenced in the font in the basement of the Nauvoo Temple.) Bowed in sorrow, Harriet carried on, but again death struck after just four months from the death of the father. Baby William Morgan died on 12 October 1840.
A history of Lewis Brunson (Harriet's next oldest son) says that after his father's death, he and brother Joseph went to live at the home of Brother Hyrum Smith, who was a good friend of the family. In 1841 Harriet married John Elmer, whose wife Sarah had died in 1838. The children then came to live with her and their stepfather. It wasn't long until 7 year old Joseph died, March 3 1842.
Records in the possession of Betty Smith give the information that Harriet had one child by John Elmer. This was Lucretia, born 28 August 1845 in Pottawatomie County, Iowa. Lucretia died as a child. For some reason we don't know she was sealed to her mother and Seymour Brunson on 26 October 1877 in the St. George Temple, along with the most of the Brunson children.
John Elmer came to Utah with his family in 1852 and settled in Payson, Utah County. In Volume 12 Heart Throbs of the West page 433, we find that Harriet Gould Brunson, (Note that she is not listed as Harriet Elmer.) Lewis Brunson and Seymour Brunson Jr. crossed the plains to Utah in 1851. Apparently she came to Utah with her sons rather than with John Elmer.
Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah, page 777, says that they arrived in September 1851 with the Roswell Stevens Company. Harriet Gould Brunson is listed in Milestones of Millard as a pioneer of Fillmore, Utah, where her sons Lewis and Seymour Jr. settled. Strangely enough, she is nowhere called Harriet Elmer. However, she apparently lived for a time with John Elmer in Payson, because Dr. Clyde F. Brunson recalls hearing how his father, Lewis Brunson, was called to go to Payson to bring his mother to Fillmore to live after the death of John Elmer.
Her daughter Jershua married John Spencer, and now as far as we know, never came to Utah. Her oldest son Reuben married Deborah Townsend and never joined the church. He was baptized by proxy in 1950. He did not come west with the rest of the family.
Her son Lewis married three wives: Amanda Louisa Park, Lamira Mace, and Catherine Keaton Carling. Seymour Jr. married Elizabeth Armitta Mace. Lamira and Armitta Mace were daughters of Hyrum Mace.
Harriet Gould Brunson died in Fillmore on 31 July 1879. She lacked twelve days of being 78 years old. On March 30 1852 she had gone to the Salt Lake Endowment House and received her own endowments.
