BRIEF HISTORY:
This battalion, along with a battalion under the command of Major William Russell, was part of an expedition led by Major Uriah Blue (39th U.S. Infantry) into West Florida in December 1814/January 1815. Their mission was to roam the Escambia River in search of refugee Creek warriors who escaped Jackson's capture of Pensacola (7 November 1814). The mission was largely unsuccessful, as the troops suffered from lack of supplies.

Their rendezvous point was Fort Montgomery and at the end of the war they were in the vicinity of Baton Rouge, where they were waiting to go to New Orleans to participate in the campaign there. The war concluded before they were called out. The muster rolls of Captains Conway, Cummings, Price, and Tipton contain physical descriptions of the soldiers, as well as the county of residence. Captain Rueben Tipton and his four brothers served in the same company.^16,17,18

     This regiment was recruited during the latter part of 1864 in Anderson, Knox, Campbell, McMinn, Meigs and Monroe counties. It was organized at Athens, Tenn., in the spring of 1865.During the greater portion of its service it was stationed at Athens and was actively employed in hunting guerrillas, with whom it had frequent engagements. It was mustered out July 27, 1865, in accordance with orders from the war department.

     Elias Roberts was born on 5 March 1767 at Pendleton, Anderson Co., South Carolina, USA.² He married Rebecca Brashears, daughter of Robert Samuel Brashears and Phoebe Nicks, in 1786 at Pendleton, Anderson Co., South Carolina, USA.³

     First Families of Tennessee list. Elias was buried next to Popular Creek where the water tower was torn down. The headstones were missing before the Manhattan Project. Snyder Roberts verified the existence of the cemetery in his writings. DOE verified the existence of the cemetery in 2013.There is no documentation proof of Elias's birth date or place, but the date and place on this memorial appears to be the accepted date on Ancestry.com family trees.

     Elias Roberts, (date and place of birth unknown), died in 1806 Roane County, TN married Rebecca Brashears (b: 09 Jan 1771 Guilford County NC d.1859 Roane County, TN) about 1786 in Pendleton County, SC. Her parents were Robert Samuel Brashears and Phoebe Nicks Brashears. Her sister, Nancy Brashears, married Zaccheus Roberts, who may have been a brother or other kinsman to Elias. There is NO proof of a father named Edward, although it could be true. .
     In 1785, Robert Samuel Brashears received a patent for 402 acres of land on Saluda River in SC, Presumably, Rebecca would have been living with him at that time. .
     Elias Roberts can be first positively documented in Deed Book B, page 153, on file in Anderson County, SC. "This indenture made the 28th day of December in the year of our Lord, 1787, between David Loggan of Abbeville County and Elias Roberts....... 200 acres situated on the South side of Saluda River." .
     It is presumed Elias and Rebecca married in late 1786, took a lease on the above-described plantation with the option to buy it at the end of one year, which they did buy Dec. 28, 1787. .
     Of interest, but with no established connection, was a survey of 150-acres on the waters of George's Creek and Saluda River in 1784 for ZEPHANIAH ROBERTS. If Zephaniah and Elias were not blood related, they were at least neighbors. .
     Elias Roberts is listed in the 1790 Pendleton County, SC census. Elias Roberts disposed of one-half of his plantation in SC in 1793 (Book B, page 223), and the second 100-acres sale was recorded in Book B, page 228-229. After Elias had sold his land in SC in January 1794, he is next found in the records of Knox County, TN in August of the same year. (Roane County was formed from Knox County in 1801). He is a witness to the signature of his father-in-law's purchase of 640-acres, dated August 8, 1794..
     Elias, his wife and children, and most likely Zaccheus Roberts and family probably lived on the Brashears holdings for a while, because it was 1796 before the records show that Elias Roberts bought from Stockley Donelson and Francis Fulchas 192-acres on the waters of Clinch adjoining Charles McClung and John Rhea..
     Roane County, Deed Book E, page 306, records a deed of conveyance from Stockley Donelson to Elias Roberts for 500-acres located at the mouth of, and divided by, the waters of Poplar Creek at its juncture with Clinch River. [present site of Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plat Site] I have a nice photo of the K-25 plant, with the farm outlined which I will share with descendants. .
     Elias Roberts was enrolled in Capt. John Walker's Company. He was summoned to jury duty several times. Is on 1805 Tax List for Roane County, and in 1806. He died in 1806, cause unknown. His widow, Rebecca outlived him by more than 50 years, and managed the 500-acre farm..
     Chancery Court - 27 May 1852 property of Elias Roberts, at his death:
     Personal property consisting of cattle horses & some other stock farming tools & household furniture.....it appears that the inventory of the personal property amounted in value to $635.50-1/2 cts. .
     "Also owned & possessed a valuable tract of land situate in the county of Roane containing 453 acres more or less, joining lands of Lewis Burris & others on the north side of Clinch River, beginning on a white oak on the east side of Big Poplar creek thence down said creek with it several meanders to a horse(?) barn(?), Thence south fifty two west crossing said creek three chains to a white oak, thence North fifty nine west thirty chains to a stake in a field, thence North twenty four west eighty five & 4/10 chains to a sassafras on the road & near a field, thence north 51 East 46 & 8/10 chains to a post oak, Thence north 81 & 44 chains to a stake & points Thence South 79 East crossing the said poplar creek 41 chains to a stake & pointers thence a conditional line made between William & John Ellis & the Robertses south 49 East 145 hains to a stake & pointers, thence south 40 west 31-1/10 chains to post oak, Gardenhires now Lewis Burrises corner thence north 59 west 84 chains the Beginning. ".
Chancery Court records at Kingston in 1854: Jane A.. Nesmith vs Rebecca Roberts and Others –
     Extends over a 2-year period. The complainant is Jane R. Nesmith, the granddaughter of Elias Roberts, who asked the Chancery Court to make a division of the Elias Roberts estate to the heirs. The heirs are listed as: .
     EDWARD, ROBERTS S., JOHN C., BASSIL, ELIJAH, PHILLIP, ELIZABETH, MARY [POLLY], RACHEL, and PHEBE. Rebecca is entitled to widow's dower. .
     Jane Nesmith says ......the aforesaid tract of land has been occupied & cultivated by John Roberts, Samuel Roberts, Phillip Roberts & Rebecca Roberts a part of the children & widow of the said Elias Roberts and they have rept & enjoyed all of the rents & profits arising from said farm since the death of the said Elias Roberts. Her counsel, J. Y. Smith.
     Deponent further states that she is acquainted with nine of the heirs, to wit, Robert S., Edward, John, Bassil, Elijah & Philip Roberts, sons of Eli Roberts and with Betsey, Polly and Rachel Roberts daughters of said E. Roberts, and thinks it more than probable that she may have seen another daughter Phebe Roberts, but cannot be positive as to her..

     !"A Brashear(s) Family History, Vol 3" by Charles Brashears: The first documentation for Elias is in Deed Book B, p.153, Anderson Co, SC. An indenture made the 28th day of Dec, 1787 for 200 acres situated on the south side of Saluda River (near RSB). He and Rebecca probably married in late 1786, took a lease on the above plantation and bought it on Dec 28, 1787. Elias is listed in the 1790 census for Pendleton Co, SC. They disposed of the plantation in SC in January 1794, and Elias is a witness for RSB in Dec 1794 in Knox (now Roane) Co, TN.
     Elias died in September 1806, cause unknown. He was probably buried in the Roberts family cemetery some 75 yards from the bank of Poplar Creek opposite the bluff later named "Granny Roberts' Bluff." His widow, Rebecca, outlived him by more than 50 years. The Elias Roberts 500?acre farm is a term found throughout the records for 50 years until the farm was finally sold through the courts in 1856.
     After Elias's death, his widow, Rebecca (Brashears) Roberts, was appointed Executress of the estate. Rebecca proved herself to be made of stern stuff, because she assumed the head of the household and general manager for the Roberts family with assists from time to time by her various children. Eventually, her son John C. Roberts acquired the interest of 5 of his brothers and sisters in the homeplace.
Rebecca was laid to rest beside Elias and was later joined by the remains of 6 or 8 members of the Roberts family. As the Roberts died, moved, and scattered to all parts of the country, the graveyard fell into a bad state of upkeep. Unfortunately, the graveyard disappeared rather mysteriously in the early 1940's, and even the tombstones have not been found. Although the tombstones were moved, the bodies were not disinterred, therefore the remains of Elias and Rebecca now lie with a 300?ft elevated water tank as a marker at their heads, and a large industrial plant stands as a monument of a sort on their old home and farm site.      Francis Sr was a colonial soldier in the French and Indian War. He enlisted at age 22 and was a private under Capt Jno. McNeal 1st Va Regt until 2/7/1780. In 1770 he moved to Charlotte Co buying 655 acres on Horsepen Creek from Wm Read - see Charlotte Co deeds. He married Martha Neal nee Hatchett (widow of Mr. Neal) b 1740 d 1818 Martha had one son and daughter by Mr Neal

     ***wife of Francis Sr , Matha was daughter of Wm Hatchett and Eliz. ???. They were French Huguenots who fled here in 1790 to Henrico Co. They were on the 2nd ship here and settled in Mannachin Town on the James River. William Hatchett was the son of John Hatchett and Elizabeth Bass.
Francis Sr died in 1788. His estate is recorded in Charlotte Co Va. Of Francis Sr's children this is all that is known-
