John McCoy (Sr.) died on 16 March 1815 at French Camp, Choctaw Co., Mississippi, USA; Died during War of 1812
From Find A Grave:
     Birth:      1770
     Death:      Mar. 16, 1815
John Mecoy was born in the 1770's in Craven County, North Carolina. He married Mary Beesley on December 21,1797, in Craven County. They had seven children; John, Hardy, Abner, Sidney, Mary, Elizabeth, and Jackson Mecoy. John Mecoy's parents were Willis and Keziah Mecoy of Cove City, NC. John's family lived in Craven County for over 50 years in and around the Cove City area. John had several brothers and sisters: Hardy Mecoy, Willis Mecoy II, Delana Mecoy Daughty, Edward Mecoy, Sarah Mecoy, Betsey Mecoy, Lewis Mecoy, Huldey Mecoy, and William Mecoy.
John Mecoy moved to Rutherford County with his wife, children and in-laws, in 1806. He purchased approximately 500 acres of land near his father-in-law, John Beesley and brother-in-law, Solomon Beesley. He served on the Grand Jury for Rutherford County Court, between the years of 1807 and 1812. John also worked for the county, laying out roads and clearing land for development of roads.
In the fall of 1814, John enlisted in the War of 1812, as a private. The company's first expedition was to New Orleans to join Andrew Jackson's motley crew of soldiers defending the mouth of the Mississippi from the British. The expedition and was headed by Colonel William Carroll, and placed under the authority of Captain Bird Nance. The troops traveled by riverboat to New Orleans. After a bloody battle leaving over 700 British soldiers dead the volunteers readied to return home. In March of 1815, traveling on foot up the Natchez Trace to Tennessee, many of the troops became ill and died; John was one of them. His body is buried in an unmarked grave somewhere around French Camp, Mississippi. Military records indicate that March 16, 1815, was the date of his death. Yellow Fever or Dysentery was thought to be the cause.
Mary Beesley Mecoy remarried on December 3, 1817, to John Patterson, also of Rutherford County. The family soon moved to McNairy County, TN. The children became of age and scattered across the country. Abner married Polly Ann Ferrell on January 8, 1824, and purchased Indian land near Walnut, MS. Abner lived until the ripe old age of 88, and had 8 children with Polly. Hardy married Louisa Thorton on September 23, 1822, and moved his family to Washington County, Illinois before 1830. Hardy and Louisa had 6 children. He died in Washington County, Illinois, in October 1858. John Mecoy, Jr. married Abicilla Patterson and moved to Madison County, AR. John and Abicilla had 8 children. John passed away in the 1870's. It is thought that John and Mary's daughters settled in Illinois with Hardy. Mary Beesley Mecoy Patterson moved in with Abner and his family after the death of her second husband and is buried in Tippah County, MS. Most of the children's descendants changed the spelling of their name to McCoy during the next few generations.

JOHN MECOY married Mary BEESLEY in 1797, in Craven County, North Carolina. They moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee, in 1804, with Mary's family the Beesley's. Her brother Solomon BEESLEY, and his wife Casandra ECCLEN, and her father John BEESLEY, along with the Mary and John, settled near the town of Murfeesboro. All together they owned close to 2000 acres of land. John Mecoy and Solomon Beesley were instrumental in laying out the first roads in Rutherford County. John Mecoy was killed in the War of 1812, in New Orleans, on March 16, 1815. Mary married again to John PATTERSON in December of 1817, and they moved to MCNAIRY COUNTY, Tennessee, where they lived until John Patterson died of old age. The Beesley's remained in Rutherford County. John Beesley died in 1819. John and Mary Mecoy had seven children:

I am currently searching for information on Abner's siblings, any information you might have would be greatly appreciated.

The name McCoy was changed several times over the generations. In Willis Mecoy's will he spelled it Mecoy, John also spelled it that same way. Abner could not write his name, so I'm not sure how he would have spelled it, if he could. Abner's children all spelled it MeCoy, with a capital C, making it more like the original McCoy. Abner's grandchildren went back to the original spelling of McCoy in the 1920's. Throughout all the generations, in census records, it is almost always spelled McCoy.
****************************************************************
I grew up hearing how the name had been changed over a dispute between two brothers during the Revolutionary War. The story I always heard was, there was two brothers, one named John, and one named George, who fought on opposite sides of the war, one for the mother country, and one for the colonies. The dissention became so great that George changed the spelling of his name to Mecoy, end of story. When I began researching it became apparent that there was never a GEORGE, there was a WILLIS!! That really made me sceptical, I began thinking that maybe Abner just made up this whole story, and how would he know anyway, he could'nt even write his own name. Low and behold, I found Willis' will, and on it his signature "Willis Mecoy." More documents soon surfaced and it appeared the story was true, however, I don't believe actual documentation of this fued will ever be uncovered, but we shall see. Back to my digging. (Forgive me Grandpa Ab, for being so disrespectful!)12

; Biography of John Mecoy (ca. 1770-1815) posted 06 Oct 2009 by Melissa McCoy-Bell on Ancestry:
"John Mecoy moved to Rutherford County from Craven County, NC with his wife, children and in-laws, in around 1806.
"In the fall of 1814, John enlisted in the War of 1812, as a private.
"Mary Beesley Mecoy remarried on December 3, 1817, to John Patterson, also of Rutherford County. It is unknown where Mary's daughters settled or who they married. Mary Beesley Mecoy Patterson moved in with Abner and his family after the death of her second husband and is buried in Tippah County, MS in Coker Cemetery, south of Walnut, in a grave without a marker."

John McCoy (Sr.) began military service circa 1812 at War of 1812 There seem to be two different sets of service records for "John MeCoy". There was a Captain Hargrave's Company of Mounted Volunteers in Illinois, which may be the first record. The second record is for service in the Tennessee Militia, which is more likely to be this John McCoy (though the name may have been common even in TN).
