Thomas II Claiborne of Crayford, co. Kent was born circa 1557 at King's Lynn, co. Norfolk, England.4 He married Sarah Smith on 21 November 1598 at St. Dunstan's Church, Stepney Parish, co. Middlesex, England,

"'1598 November 21, Thomas Cleyborne of the Parish of St. Margaret's, Lynne, county of Norfolk and Sara James, of this Parish, by License.1,4'"
; There is, in the various sources, a disagreement about the ancestry of this William Claibourne, including two contemporary authors that I have generally consider reasonably authoritative on most issues of English noble heritage: Douglas Richardson and the late Leo van de Pas. While continuing to examine the issues through more research, I have decided for the present to use the "non-royal" ascent for William, which is based on the most recent research.
William Gleason [1998] (an article republished The National Society of the Claiborne Family Descendants [NSCFD Website]), summarizes the disagreement as follows:
"For generations, historians thought William Claiborne descended from the ancient Cliburn family, a Westmoreland, England, clan who traced their lineage to Malcolm II, the first King of Scotland. William Claiborne of Virginia reportedly used the Cliburn coat of arms on his official documents, and the Cliburn heraldic emblem is on numerous Claiborne family gravestones, especially in Virginia. But in the 1940s, a Virginia genealogical researcher dispelled Claiborne's Westmoreland lineage after determining that Claiborne was the son of Thomas Clebourne, a Kent, England, native who once served as mayor, alderman and justice of the peace in King's Lynn, a Norfolk, England, village. The researcher suspected - but never determined - a link between Thomas Clebourne and the Cliburn family of Westmoreland." (See Torrence 1948)
William's Royal Descent:
Two early books, Claiborne [1917] and Spraker [1922] stated that he had a royal ancestry.
1. Spraker [1922:531] states that "William Claibourne came to Virginia in 1621, and was of royal descent. Through the De Toneys and Cliffords, he was descended from Edward III, King of England, Duncan and Malcom, Kings of Scotland..."
3. Claiborne [1917] lays out this heritage in detail, back to Malcom of Scotland and Ethelred II of England.
Using a third source, Leo van de Pas' website "Genealogics" presents essentially the same ancestry for William as that laid out in Claiborne [1917], and cites Browning [1969] as his source (the 7th edition published in 1969 is apparently a reprint of the 1911 ed.)
In all of these sources, William is stated to be the son of Edmund Cleburne/Claibourne and his wife Grace Bellingham.
The Alternative Ascent for William:
In both of his two major works concerning the medieval English ancestry of colonial American families (Plantagenet Ancestry and Magna Carta Ancestry), Richardson calls William the "2nd son of Thomas Clayborn, of Crayford, Kent, by his wife, Sarah Smith." Thomas Brereton, his son (will dated March 23, 1698, proved August 16, 1699), married twice, and had Thomas by a first marriage (he died at ten years), and by a second marriage with Mary ---, who married 2dly, Leonard Howson (L. H.'s will was dated December 13, 1703, proved February 21, 1704-'5), had a daughter named Elizabeth.
Elizabeth, first named, sister of Capt. Thomas Brereton, and daughter of Col. Thomas Brereton and Jane Claiborne, married Capt. Thomas Winder, and had Elizabeth, aged 20 years in 1711, and then wife of Richard Kenner. The will of R.K. was proved January 18, 1726-'27. It mentions wife Elizabeth, daughter Hannah, sons Rodham and Richard, sisters Elizabeth Debutts, Frances Spellman, and Hannah Cralle. Leonard Howson left to his "daughter-in-law Elizabeth" a ring with her grandfather Brereton's coat-of-arms upon it. Capt. Henry Brereton (supra) had a son Thomas, apparently of age before 1703. And in 1736 Thomas Brereton, of Shotwick Park, Co. Chester, England, conveyed land in Richmond County, Virginia, devised by Salisbury Lloyd, late of Ledbrook in Co. Flint, England, eldest son of John Lloyd, late of the city of Chester, Eng., deceased, to whom the land was conveyed in 1708 by Gilbert Metcalf, of London, merchant. John Lloyd was executor of Col. William Lloyd, of Richmond County, Virgnia, who died about 1704.

Thomas Brereton, his son (will dated March 23, 1698, proved August 16, 1699), married twice, and had Thomas by a first marriage (he died at ten years), and by a second marriage with Mary ---, who married 2dly, Leonard Howson (L. H.'s will was dated December 13, 1703, proved February 21, 1704-'5), had a daughter named Elizabeth.
Elizabeth, first named, sister of Capt. Thomas Brereton, and daughter of Col. Thomas Brereton and Jane Claiborne, married Capt. Thomas Winder, and had Elizabeth, aged 20 years in 1711, and then wife of Richard Kenner. The will of R.K. was proved January 18, 1726-'27. It mentions wife Elizabeth, daughter Hannah, sons Rodham and Richard, sisters Elizabeth Debutts, Frances Spellman, and Hannah Cralle. Leonard Howson left to his "daughter-in-law Elizabeth" a ring with her grandfather Brereton's coat-of-arms upon it. Capt. Henry Brereton (supra) had a son Thomas, apparently of age before 1703. And in 1736 Thomas Brereton, of Shotwick Park, Co. Chester, England, conveyed land in Richmond County, Virginia, devised by Salisbury Lloyd, late of Ledbrook in Co. Flint, England, eldest son of John Lloyd, late of the city of Chester, Eng., deceased, to whom the land was conveyed in 1708 by Gilbert Metcalf, of London, merchant. John Lloyd was executor of Col. William Lloyd, of Richmond County, Virgnia, who died about 1704.

THOMAS BRERETON his deceased Father, of which he prayed a Probate might be granted, THOMAS haveing seen and read the said Will and all of them knowing the hand writing of the said Collo THOMAS BRERETON and assured that the said Will was that of the deceased, though Mr. JOHN JENNY and Mr. PETER PLATT witnesses of the said Will are since the writing of the said Will dead, Mr. THOMAS HOBSON, SENR. upon his Oath declareing that when the said Collo. BRERETON had in his office before the said witnesses signed sealed and delivered the said Will he brought the said Will and Testament in his hands and shewing it to the said HOBSON told him that was his Last Will and Testament and asked his advice about it who then approveing of it sealed it up and gave it ye said HOBSON to keep who hath kept it by him until a little time before the said Collo's death when he called for it and said he would alter some things in it but dyed before he effected it. The Court doe therefore grant the said Mr. THOMAS BRERETON a Probate of his said deceased Father's Will according to Law

This Indenture made the tenth day of July in the year of or: Lord one thousand six hundred & seaventy Betweene Thomas Ball of the County of Sommersett in the Province of Maryland on the one party And Thomas Brereton gent, of the County of Northumberland on the other partie; Wittnesseth That the said Thomas Ball for and in Consideracon of three thousand pounds of tobacco & Caske in hand received, with which he the said Thomas doth acknowledge himselfe fully Satisfied & paid hath granted bargained Sold infeofed alliened & Confirmed, And by these presents doth grant bargain Sell infeofe Alliene & Confirme unto the said Thomas Brereton, A parcell of Land Called Dame quarter Containing one hundred & fifty acres of Land more or Lesse; Scituate Lying & being upon the east Side of Chesepeack bay on the southermost Side or pointe of Wicocomoco river beginning for bredth at the westermost side of A Creeke Called Williamsons Creeke at a marked white white oake itanding on the mouth thereof & from there running up the said Creeke forty perches bounded on the south by a Line drawne westsouthwest from the end of the former Line for Length six hundred & thirty perches to A Creeke Called Balls Creeke bounded on the west by the said Creeke Called Balls Creeke bounded on the north by the sound or bay of the river of Wiccocomoco - aforesaid, Together with all Liberties & Privilidges in as ample manner as it to him the said Ball granted by Pattent from the Right hon:ble Caecilius Lord Proprietary of Maryland bearing date the six day of Aprill Ao: Do: 1667 To have and to hold the said Land with the appurtenances and every part & parcell thereof unto him the said Thomas Brereton his heires & assignes for ever; And the said Thomas Ball doth by these presents for himselfe his heires executors & administrators: & to & for every & either of them Co venant promise grante and agree to and with the said Thomas Brereton his heiries executors: & administrators that the said Land and every part thereof now is and from time to time and att all times after Shall be & remayne free & Cleare, & freely & Clearly acquitted & dischardged from all & all manner of Joyntures Dower titles of Dower, Judgemts Statutes Mortgages former Grantes Claimes or demands & incumbrances, whatsoever of any manner of person or persons whatsoever to him him the said Thomas Brereton his heires & assignes for ever; In Wittnes whereof I the said Thomas Ball have hereto Sett my hand & Seale the day & year above written
