     Patricia Lorraine (Tenning) Carpenter, 71, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Clear Lake.
     Patricia Lorraine Carpenter was born in Brookings on July 3, 1944, to Leonard and Genevieve (Olson) Tenning. The family lived on a farm near Sinai until Pat was 3 years old, when they moved to a farm east of Volga. She attended elementary and high school in Volga, graduating as valedictorian of her class in 1962. She attended the National School of Business in Rapid City, where she met Billy Joe Carpenter, who was in the Air Force. They married at Volga on Dec. 30, 1964, and lived in Rapid City until Joe’s discharge from the Air Force when they moved to his hometown of Hopkinsville, Ky. They spent much of their married life in Kentucky and some years near Nunda. Two sons, William and Charles, were born to them. After Joe’s death on Oct. 13, 1989, Pat lived at Volga and in Pierre and also western South Dakota near Billy. At the time of her death she was a resident of the Deuel County Good Samaritan Home at Clear Lake.
     Pat is survived by two sons, William (Julie) of Sturgis, Charles of Mannington, Ky., one granddaughter; one grandson; two step-granddaughters; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia (Leland) Schlimmer of Volga, a niece, two nephews and seven cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband.
     Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Volga. Burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will precede services at the church Wednesday morning. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

     Ann Michelle Happ (nee Crow), 90, joined her Lord on January 10, 2016.
     Ann was born in Austin, Texas, on August 5, 1925, to Frank Wilson Crow and Maude Ann Crow (nee Routon) Crow. She moved to Medina in 1959 with her surviving husband of 71 years, (married November 21, 1944) former Medina County Commissioner, John H. Happ, Sr. Ann is also survived by her son, Col. (Ret.) John H. Happ, Jr., (Carol, nee Lucas) of College Station, Texas; son, Gregory Wilson Happ, (Susan) of Medina; grandson, John H. Happ, III, (Nellie) , and great grandson, John H. Happ, IV, all of Spring, Texas. Ann is also survived by her sister-in-law, Irene Crow of Austin, Texas, and nieces, Janine Parrish, Cherie McMahan, Julie Ann Evans, and Melanie Reck. Ann was the proud and loving sister of John Wilson Crow, deceased, who served as Travis County (TX) Treasurer for more than 30 years.
     Personal condolences may be expressed by joining the family at Waite and Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina, on Thursday, January 14, 2016 from 5pm to 8pm. A memorial service will be held at Waite and Son, Friday, on January 15, 2016 at 10:30am.
     Ann was a devoted wife and mother but nevertheless a writer and businesswoman. She was employed as the society editor for the former Medina County Leader Post and the Medina County Gazette. She served for a time as a writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer covering Medina County. She authored the children’s Christmas Story, Billie the Bluebell Bear and supported her husband in his position as Editor of Gleanings in Bee Culture, published by the A.I. Root Co. Ann also wrote many other featured articles and notes for the former Savings Deposit Bank. She was crowned Mrs. Austin in 1955; a preliminary beauty and homemaking-skills competition for the Mrs. America pageant.
     From 1972 to 1994, Ann was the Director of Gallery Blue art gallery where she held one person art shows for local artists Franklin A. Bates, Frederick C. Graff, Allen Banks, and Henry Edinger along with Sharon Kinzer, formerly of Akron, Jack Liberman of Bath, and Charles Pfahl of Akron and later, New York City. She also represented many other Northeast Ohio artists, including one of her favorites, local art teacher, Ray Libengood. Operating Gallery Blue gave Ann the opportunity to know many Medina artists, art students, and residents of the community. She had a patient, kind, and warm manner with everyone she met and was truly interested in their goals, talents, and achievements.
     Ann was a devoted member of the Golden Rule Circle of the International Order of King’s Daughters and Sons, Inc., for over fifty years. She served as the appointed Medina City representative on the Medina County Board of Health for many years and served one term as President. In addition, Ann was a member of the Medina Democratic Central Committee for over 20 years and was proud of the legacy that she and her family have in the Medina County Democratic Party. Democratic officials connected to the Happ family have served at least 94 years in office since the Happs were elected in 1980.
     The family wishes to express special thanks to the wonderful and caring staff at Willowood Care Center of Brunswick, where Ann spent her last months after suffering a stroke last April. Ann will be long remembered by her family, friends, associates, readers, and customers, as one of those unique persons you are fortunate enough to have known and loved.
