; Per Genealogics:
"Hermann 'der Gelehrte' (the Scholar) was born at the castle of Grebenstein about 1341, the son of Ludwig von Hessen, Herr zu Grebenstein, and Elisabeth von Sponheim-Kreuznach. He studied in Paris and Prague. After the death in 1366 of Otto 'der Schütz' (the Guardian), the son and the intended heir of Landgraf Heinrich II, Heinrich appointed Hermann in 1367 as co-ruler.
"On 6 March 1368 Hermann married Gräfin Johanna von Nassau-Weilburg, daughter of Johann I, Graf von Nassau-Weilburg, and Johanna, Gräfin von Saarbrücken und Commercy. Johanna died without progeny on 1 January 1383, and on 15 October of that year Hermann married Burggräfin Margarete von Nürnberg, daughter of Friedrich V, Burggraf von Nürnberg, and Elisabeth von Meissen. They had four sons and four daughters of whom Ludwig I, Margarete and Agnes would have progeny.
"The finances of the land of Hessen, as well as those of the langrave, had been largely exhausted in the Sternerkrieg against Braunschweig. After his elevation to landgrave, Hermann decided to replenish the land's finances by raising a new tax on all imported food, dress materials and hardware. The tax infuriated the nobility and citizens. On 11 January 1377 at a meeting in the town hall of Altstadt in Kassel, the representatives of the towns of Lower Hessen and the Werra decided to refuse to pay this tax under any circumstance. In 1378 the citizens dissolved the council of three towns in Kassel (Alstadt, Neustadt and Freiheit) and formed a towns' alliance. The nobles joined the new alliance and captured the landgrave's castle. However, through the mediation of Landgraf Balthasar von Thüringen a compromise was reached in May 1378.
"This did not inhibit Hermann in 1384 from promulgating a new constitution in which Kassel lost all its independence and he made himself its absolute ruler. Thereupon the citizens again turned to Balthasar von Thüringen. He formed an alliance against Hermann with the duke of Braunschweig and the archbishop of Mainz. The allied troops unsuccessfully attacked the town of Kassel three times. However the situation took a new turn in 1390 with the death of the archbishop of Mainz, Adolf von Nassau, and a compromise was reached in 1394 with his successor Konrad von Weinsberg, which was sealed in the Peace Treaty of Frankfurt. This was followed in 1400 by the Peace Treaty of Friedberg with Mainz and Braunschweig, after Herzog Friedrich von Braunschweig-Giffhorn, the emperor-elect, had been murdered near Fritzlar in June 1400 by Graf Heinrich von Waldeck and his co-conspirators Friedrich von Hertingshausen and Konrad (Kunzmann) von Falkenberg.
"Hermann was able to extend his jurisdiction in this time. In 1399 he took possession of Ulrichstein, followed shortly afterwards by Schotten in the Vogelsberg. In 1402 that was followed by Hauneck, in 1406 by Vacha and finally in 1408 by part of the estate of Itter. Hermann died on 10 June 1413, and was succeeded by his son Ludwig I."2
