Matthew Howard was born before 1611.1 He married Ann Hall between 1624 and 1627.2,3

Matthew Howard died between 1652 and 1659 at Anne Arundel Co., Maryland, USA.1
; Matthew Howard (born ?, died between 1652-1659 Lower Norfolk County, VA) most certainly was _NOT_ the son of Matthew Howard born 19 June 1609 St. Andrew's Holborn, Middlesex, England, died circa 1620, buried 2 June 1620 St. Andrew Holborn, Middlesex, England. The following information was provided to me by Fredric Z. Saunders : For the claims on Matthew HOWARD's ancestry that he was originally ARUNDELL, but changed his name to HOWARD, for political reasons, the theory was first published by Harry Wright NEWMAN in his 1933 1st Ed. of "Anne Arundel Gentry." It was later learned that this "theory" had no basis in fact. (See John Bailey Calvert NICKLIN, "Matthew Howard of Wardour Castle vs. Mathew HOWARD of Virginia" in Maryland Historical Magazine Vol. 34 (Dec. 1939) 362-365.) Facts were presented there that were not known when the theory was first proposed. 1. Sir Thomas ARRUNDELL, 1st Baron of Arundell of Wardour did have a son named Matthew ARRUNDELL who was baptized 19 June 1609 at St. Andrew's Holborn, Middlesex, England. (Also see: http://familysearch.org/Search/IGI/igi_individual_frame.asp?recid=1260346&ldsnn=3 that record taken from the parish register.) 2. The burial record of "Matthew ARUNDELL, son of Thomas Lo: ARUNDELL out of Castill Yard in Holborne was buried in the Chancell under the Table the 2 June 1620" was recorded in the St. Andrew Holborn, Middlesex, England parish register. 3. The will of Thomas ARUNDELL was written and probated in 1639, and named no son Matthew. Harry Wright NEWMAN himself, who started the idea, admitted in his HOWARD section of "Anne Arundel Gentry" 2nd Ed., Vol. II, published in 1970 that the "theory" had no basis in fact.

Reference: From Welsh [1928:143]:
"The .. Matthew Arundel theory." Mrgt. Howard, niece of Th.. 3d Duke of Norfolk, m. Sir Th. Arundel (convicted of conspiracy in the murder of the Duke of Northumberland, and beheaded 2.26.1552, aud his property confiscated), and had 1 son, Sir Matthew Arundel (m. Mrgt. Willoughby), who had Sir Th. (m.1 Maria Wriothesley, of Hy., Earl of Southampton, and had issue: m.2, 7.1.1608, the widow Ann Thoroughgood). Sir Th. and Ann had, among others, Matthew (1609-1620, according to Burke) and Ann Arundel (m. Cecil, Lord Baltimore). The "theory" is, that Sir Matthew Arundel, under the odium ot the calamity that had befallen his family, assumed his mother's name of Howard ; that his son, Sir Th., wanderer for years over Europe, returned to Eng. after the death of Queen Eliz. (1603), regained favor, and was created Baron Arundel of Wardour, by which name he is known in subsequent history ; but that Matthew, son of Sir Th., retaining the name Howard, ot greater power and prestige, did not die in 1620 but left Eng., and with his kindred Arundels, Willoughbys and Thoroughgoods (Hotten's Emigrants) reappeared in the early Va. Colony as Matthew Howard. (See "Notable Southern Families," v. 1, Howard). The theory lacks proof; but that there was some connection or relationship between the above Arundel family and the Matthew Howard fam. of Va.., appears certainly indicated by the fact that, when Jn. Howard, Sr., of Md., son of Matthew1 affixed to his will his seal with the Howard Arms, one of his witnesses was his friend, Henry Wriothesley. As to a more recent assumption, that the father of Matthew Howard1 was John, one of the members of the London Company, or the John killed in the Va. massacre of 1622 (published a.s a fact in Col. Farns. VII, and "Abridged Compend"), it is wholly without evidential foundation."4 He was Puritan.1

Matthew Howard and Ann Hall immigrated between 1624 and 1627 to Virginia, USA.3
