Her first marriage was to Capt. Moses Hawkins who died in the Battle of Germantown, 4 October 1777. The British had taken Philadelphia eight days before this battle, after which the British general Howe divided his troops. He had great tenacity at Germantown, 7 miles NE of Philadelphia. The Americans were determined; but the fight lasted longer than they anticipated. In the end, Gen. Howe prevailed. Susanna Strother Hawkins was left a widow with a young son, Moses Hawkins, Jr.
Susanna was the daughter of William Strother and his first wife, Sarah Bailey, (who was the widow of William Pannill). She married Thomas Coleman in Orange county, Virginia on 28 June 1781.
