Anne Wright was born about 1660 in Chickacone, Northumberland Co., VA. Anne Wright, daughter of Captain Richard Wright, inherited the estate upon the Potomac adjoining the present Mount Vernon: Anne Wright's inheritance from her father: "I give and bequeath unto my daughter Anne Wright all that my said land in the 'ffreshes' of the Patomack River." And she received on September 6, 1665, from her uncle and guardian, Colonel Nicholas Spencer, "in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have towards Anne Wright my niece, the daughter of Richard Wright within mentioned deceased" one-half of the eleven hundred acres at Mount Vernon on the Potomac which he had patented with her father, September 25, 1661, the other half of which she had inherited. This patent was recorded by Colonel Spencer in Westmoreland County on the day of his gift. Anne Wright married George Nicholas Hacke, born in Accomac County, Virginia, son of Dr. George and Anna (Herman) [correction--Verlet] Hacke. Dr. Hacke was born at Cologne, Germany, in 1623, and appeared in Virginia in 1653; his wife was born at Amsterdam, Holland, sister [incorrect--sister-in-law] to the noted Augustine Herman, founder and lord of the great manor of Bohemia extending from Chesapeake Bay (in Cecil County, Maryland) across Delaware to the Delaware River.) (An account of Dr. Hacke appears at page 256 of Volume V of the 'Virginia Magazine of History and Biography'.) Anne (Wright) Hacke did not long retain her eleven hundred acres at Mount Vernon, as she removed to the long, low promontory, Accomac County, between Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

NB: Robert OLDSON appears in GLEAVES households in later censuses identified as a "newphew" of James and his siblings. I have not yet identified the family connection. I believe he is the Robert, son of William OLDSON and Elizabeth ARMSTRONG shown in a 1931 death certificate, and who married Florence CORNELIUS. His mother, Elizabeth (ARMSTRONG) OLDSON, was the sister of William GLEAVES's wife, Mary E. (ARMSTRONG) GLEAVES. The two BOWENs are Martha Ann (FRISBY) BOWEN (James' sister) and her son, W. H. BOWEN.6,7,8

I am still trying to identify the link between William Frisby GLEAVES and the OLDSON family.
A "Jinnie" (Jennie) OLDSON appears in his household in the 1880 census. Based on earlier censuses, she appears to be the dau of a William and Elizabeth (ARMSTRONG) OLDSON. jENNIE OLDSON appears 3 years old in the 1860 census,in the houshold of William and Elizabeth, presumably her parents, with three other OLDSON CHILDREN:
William Frisby Gleaves was listed as a resident in Harriett Campbell's household in the census report on 1 August 1850 at District 2, Queen Anne's Co., Maryland, USA;
Harriet Gleaves in the 1850 United States Federal Census
p. 156-A, lines 13-19, dwelling 20, family 20
William Frisby Gleaves was listed as a resident in James F. Gleaves Esq's household in the census report on 8 June 1860 at District 2, Queen Anne's Co., Maryland, USA;
James F Gleaves in the 1860 United States Federal Census
p. 20, lines 35-40, dwellinng 135, family 135
James is with his step-mother-in-law, Harriet. Martha A. BOWEN is Martha Ann (FRISBY) BOWEN, James' sister, with her son, W. H. BOWEN. Thomas PREMROSE is unidentified - perhaps a laborer.

p. 358-A, lines 8-14, dwelling 1058, family 1057
Mary E. GLEAVES may be either a younger stepsister of James or a niece by one of his brothers. Robert OLDSON is unidentified.
H. BOWEN.10,11,12

Mary E. Armstrong1,2
F, #103520, b. circa 1834
| Father | (?) Armstrong |
| Last Edited | 27 Dec 2025 |
Mary E. Armstrong was born circa 1834; Aged 16 in the 1850 census.3 She married William Frisby Gleaves, son of Dr. William Frisby Gleaves and Harriett Campbell, circa 1866
; Married 34 years in 1900 census. His 2nd of 2 wives.1,4,5
Mary E. Armstrong was listed as a resident in William H. C. Oldson and Elizabeth J. Armstrong's household in the census report on 31 August 1850 at District 1, Queen Anne's Co., Maryland, USA;
William H C Oldson in the 1850 United States Federal Census
p. 143-B, lines 20-27, dwelling 300, family 300
Mary E. Armstrong and James F. Gleaves Esq appeared in the census of 1 June 1870 at Districts 1 and 2, Queen Anne's Co., Maryland, USA;
James Gleaves in the 1870 United States Federal Census
p. 358-A, lines 8-14, dwelling 1058, family 1057
Mary E. GLEAVES may be either a younger stepsister of James or a niece by one of his brothers. Robert OLDSON is unidentified.
H. BOWEN.6,7,8
Mary E. Armstrong and William Frisby Gleaves appeared in the census of 12 June 1900 at Crumpton, Queen Anne's Co., Maryland, USA;

H. Joseph Peyton Lea Sr and his wife Mary Davis Lea arrived from North Carolina sometime around the turn of the century. In a house just a stone's throw North of the namesake Mill on Pharsalia road, they raised their six children.
Joseph Peyton Lea Sr. seemed to have his hands in many aspects of the development of Massies Mill at the turn of the century. He was the Postmaster in town for 30 years from 1911 from 1941. He served as the President of DePriest Bank in Massies Mill from 1916 until its demise after the Great Depression in 1932, and was involved with his brothers in the family business of the Lea Brothers General Store which sat next to the Post Office and across the street from the bank. In the center of town, the role of Lea Brothers Store extended beyond mere commerce, becoming the village's beating heart a space for gossip, groceries, and a shared sense of belonging.
