; Born on 9 January 1505; he was only nineteen when, on 9 November 1524 in Dresden, he married Magdalene of Saxony and they became the parents of seven children. On 25 January 1534 Magdalene died and, on 11 July 1535, his father and he became Elector of Brandenburg. On 1 September 1535, he married Hedwig of Poland and fathered another six children.

He was a strong ruler but, like his father, inexperienced in politics, constantly torn between the Habsburgs and the Reformation and, as a result, looses respect. Remaining a Catholic himself, but under the influence of his mother and cousin, in 1539 he introduces the Reformation. Emperor Charles V accepts this but involves him, in 1541, against the Osman Empire and, in 1542 and 1546/7, against the Schmalkaldic League.

In 1548 he recognises the Augsburger Interim and governs in a good relationship with his Lutheran brother. He places a taylor's son, Lampert Distelmeyer, in charge as Chancellor and Privy Councillor. Distelmeyer became the author of the Brandenburger Landrecht and can be regarded as the founder of the Brandenburg-Prussian state. In 1569 he inherited Prussia which induces him to proceed with further inheritance cases pending, Schlesien-Liegnitz and Brieg.

Joachim II lived extravagantly and had many love affaires and drunk very much. He built hunting castles and supported the arts and was called a Renaissance Prince. He was one of the first rulers who had a court jew as money lender. Because of his horrendous debts he became more and more under the influence of societies which controlled the finances of his states. Distelmeyer governed until after the death of Joachim II, in 1571, and till his own death in 1588. .3
