; Joseph Haines (second generation) was a farmer in West Nottingham, Chester Co., Pa, but this area turn to Cecil Co., Md after 1767. He was born at sea on the "Amity" during his voyage to America in 1682 and died on September 12, 1763, in Cecil Co. Md. Joseph Haines first marriage was to Dorothy Leeds in 1704. She died at the age of 39 on March 7, 1720. Joseph purchased 200 acres of land in Nottingham, N.J in 1707. He took an active interest in the affairs of the community in which he lived and at one time was a justice of the peace. Late in life he purchased considerable land in the Pipe Creek section of Frederick Co. now Carroll Co., Md. He and two of his sons moved to that area. Later in life he married for a second time to Elizabeth (Thomas) Haines on or about 1724. He was 42 years of age. Joseph Haines had a number of children, but our family's direct decendant is to his son William Haines.4

; Richard Haines (first generation) of Burlington County, New Jersey was the forefather or first generation of the Haines family in America.Very little is recorded about him or his life in England. The first record of he or his family was first found in parish records at St. Michael's Church, Aynho, Northhamptonshire, England when his son Richard was baptized on August 6, 1665. Since no other records were found of Richard or Margaret Haines in this area of England before this or of his first born - John, it seems likely that Richard and Margaret Haines located to Aynho shortly before the baptism of their second son Richard and before then lived in one of the neighboring parishes. It is not known what variation of the Haines/Haynes name Richard used in England. The records of the St Michael's church shows Hains. The deed records show his name as Haines. It is signifiiciant, though, that all known decendents of Richard Haines used the spelling Haines.

Richard and Margaret Haines, with their children Richard, Thomas, William and Mary left Anyho, England in the Spring of 1682. They embarked on the "Amity" and sailed from Downs England, for West Jersey. Their oldest son, John Haines, preceded his parents to America. He accompanied John Borton and family to America in 1679. He was fifteen (15) at the time. The trip for Richard Haines aboard the "Amity" was long and tedious, which was common in the days of traveling on sailing ships. Richard Haines, during the trip took ill and died. After his death, another son, Joseph Haines, was born at high sea. Of Richard Haines' family of 5 children, Joseph is the direct ancestor to our immediate family. Margaret Haines and her family arrived in Burlington N.J., in the fall of 1682. Approximately 3 years after arriving in America she remarried Henry Burcham, of Neshamony, Bucks Co., Pa. Richard Haines made provisions for a livelihood in America before leaving England, through the influence of William Penn, and the 'Society of Friends'. Richard was a man of some means and was able to purchase land before leaving for America. He purchased 100 acres of land from Edward Byllynge in West Jersey.6

; Richard Haines, his wife Margaret and five children, sailed from Aynehoe, Northamptonshire, England on the 'Amity' 23 April 1682. Richard became ill on the journey and died before reaching America. His widow arrived with six children, one, Joseph, was born on ship during the journey.
