; per Leo van de Pas: " Known as 'le Balafré' (the Scarred), he was a French soldier and statesman. He fought at Montmédy in 1542 and was at the siege of Landercies in 1543. In 1545 at Boulogne he received a near fatal wound. In 1552 and 1553 he defended Metz against Emperor Charles V and in 1556 commanded the expedition against Naples. In 1557 he was recalled to defend France's northern borders against the English and in 1558 took Calais and other towns from them. He was instrumental to the Treaty of Château Cambrésis in 1559.

He was with his brother, Cardinal Charles de Guise, the most powerful person in France during the reign of King Charles IX (1559-1560). However, while besieging the city of Orléans he was assassinated by a Huguenot."2
