; The Salisbury CECILs' famous devotion in modern times to throne and altar (the Church of England), to say nothing of Conservatism, was a good deal less solid in the more distant past. The 1st Earl, Robert Cecil, made the fatal mistake of starting the process whereby the royal prerogative was turned into a bargaining counter in negotiations with Parliament over finance, with ultimate erosion of the Crown's prestige. His son the 2nd Earl opposed CHARLES I during the Civil War, though he balked at signing the instrument approving CHARLES's beheading together with the sweeping away of the monarchy and House of Lords. Nevertheless he held high office under Cromwells' Protectorate, though he became a fawning royalist after the Restoration.2 He was 1st Earl of Salisbury: Other great families have been closely involved with high politics. None has continued that involvement so late into the modern age as the Salisbury CECILs. The 1st Earl played a crucial role in smoothing the transition from ELIZABETH I's reign to JAMES I's, and with such secrecy that the very suspicion of a correspondence between the two men only arose two centuries later. Thereafter the family produced no statesman of major importance for over 250 years. on 4 May 1605.2
