His father was Sir Richard Egerton, of Ridley; and his mother, Alice Sparke, was apparently a servant in his father's house. Even though he was illegitimate, he received a good education at Brasenose College, Oxford. He became Solicitor General in 1581 which he was until 1592; M.P. for Cheshire 1584-1587; Attorney-General 1592-1594; Chamberlain of Chester 1594-1603.
On 18 May 1594 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I and from 1594 until 1603 was Master of the Rolls. On 18 December 1598 he inherited the estates of his father's legitimate daughter, Dorothy. On 21 July 1603 he was created Baron of Ellesmere and on 24 July 1603 became Lord Chancellor which he was until twelve days before he died. From 1610 until 1617 he was Chancellor of Oxford, and on 7 November 1616 he was created Viscount Brackley and was apparently promised an Earldom which was subsequently given to his son two months after Thomas Egerton 'Lord Chancellor Ellesmere' died.1

John 2st Earl of Bridgwater, 2nd Viscount Brackley was born circa 1579 at England.1 He married Lady Frances Stanley, daughter of Ferdinando Stanley King of Man, 5th Earl of Derby, 13th Lord Strange of Knokyn and Alice Spencer, before 24 March 1603.2

John 2st Earl of Bridgwater, 2nd Viscount Brackley died on 4 December 1649.1
      ; per van de Pas:
He was M.P. for Callington 1597-1598 and for Salop in 1601. About 1601 he married Lady Frances Stanley who was the daughter of his own step-mother. He served under the Earl of Essex in Ireland, where he was knighted. On 27 May 1617, within two months of his father's death, he was created Earl of Bridgwater with remainder to the heirs male of his body thereafter begotten. He was also Lord President of Wales, and Lord Lieutenant of the counties Salop, Worcester, Hereford, Monmouth and of North and South Wales, all from 1631 until 1642.
In 1634, when he and his family were visiting in Staywood forest, his daughter, Lady Alice Egerton, was lost for quite some time but was found unharmed. This inspired the poet John Milton to write his celebrated 'Comus'.
Lady Frances Stanley, Countess of Bridgwater, died in 1636 aged only fifty-two and John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgwater, survived until 4 December 1649 when he died aged seventy.1
