; per van de Pas: "Philipp, known as Philipp 'der Ältere' to distinguish him from his own son Philipp, was born in 1402, the only child of Johann IV, Graf von Katzenelnbogen, and Gräfin Anna von Katzenelnbogen, heiress of Old-Katzenelnbogen. When his mother's father Eberhard died in the year of Philipp's birth, his father Johann was able to reunite the older and younger lines of the Katzenelnbogen family. On 24 February 1422 in Darmstadt, Philipp married Anna von Württemberg, daughter of Eberhard IV 'der Jüngere', Graf von Württemberg, and Henriette von Mömpelgard, heiress of Mömpelgard, Porrentruye and Granges. They had three children, of whom their son Philipp and daughter Anna would have progeny. In 1456 Philipp obtained an annulment of his marriage from the pope, and on 24 January 1474 he married Gräfin Anna von Nassau-Dillenburg. There were no offspring from this marriage.

For Philipp, as for his father, territorial expansion was not the foremost policy goal, although this was not neglected. Preeminent was the unceasing pursuit of expansion of their Rhine customs toll properties, the source of their financial power. Its build-up through the 15th century by their acquisition of the Rhine toll interests of the Rhenish prince-electors, which within a few decades gave Johann and Philipp control over the Rhine tolls from Gernsheim on the Upper Rhine to Lobith on the Dutch border, something achieved by no other family in the thousand year history of the Rhine tolls, was of overriding importance for their political leverage, but this was also the biggest financial event of its time in the West German region, only overtaken much later by the great houses of South German commerce.

In 1444, the year of his father's death, Philipp arranged the rebuilding of the church of Sankt Goar. In 1449 Philipp sold to Johann, abbot of Prüm, the rights to the abbey in Sankt Goar. Philipp's sons Eberhard and Philipp, known as Philipp 'der Jüngere', predeceased him, so that Philipp 'der Ältere' died without male descendants. The estates of the county of Katzenelnbogen passed in 1479 to the counts of Hessen, through his son-in-law Heinrich III, Landgraf von Hessen zu Marburg, who married Philipp's daughter Anna."1
