; per Leo van de Pas: "Lady Cecilia Letitia Gore was born about 1785 and, on 14 May 1815, became the second wife of Sir George Buggin. On 12 April 1825 aged sixty-five, her husband died and, on 2 May 1831 by Royal Licence, she adopted her mother's maiden name in lieu of Buggin. As she in no way represented her mother, who left several sons having issue, and as the said mother was herself a person of no family or fortune, this change from Buggin to Underwood was doubtless for the sake of the less plebeian sound of the latter surname.

About 1831 she is supposed to have been ecclesiastically though not legally married to H.R.H. Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex. The Royal Marriage Act of 1772 made the consent of Parliament necessary to give validity to this marriage but this was never obtained by the Duke of Sussex. However, on 10 April 1840 apparently at her husband's earnest request, she was created Duchess of Inverness. The Duke of Sussex died aged seventy on 21 April 1843 and the Duchess of Inverness, surviving him by thirty years, died on 1 August 1873 at Kensington Palace. Both were buried in Kensal Green cemetery."3 As of 2 March 1834, Lady Cecilia Leitia Gore Dss of Inverness was also known as Lady Cecilia Underwood Duchess of Inverness took her mother's maiden name after the death of her first husband.4,2,3 She was Duchess of Inverness on 10 April 1840.2

Adolphus Frederick (?) Pr of Gr Britain, Ireland and Hannover, 1st Duke of Cambridge died on 8 July 1850 at Cambridge House, Piccadilly, London, City of London, Greater London, England, at age 76.1,2,4
; per Leo van de Pas: "Born in 1774, he was created Duke of Cambridge in 1801. In 1794 he was captured by the French in Flanders but escaped unrecognised. He was highly spoken of as being courageous and amiable, as an industrious and efficient soldier. In 1795 he was wounded and called back to England. In 1813 he was sent to Hannover as commander of its army and, when the Congress of Vienna had raised the Electorate to a Kingdom, he was appointed Governor General.

As distinct from his brothers, he had neither debts nor mistresses. After the death of Princess Charlotte of Wales, his elder brother, the Duke of Clarence, asked him to look around to find a wife for him. Adolphus wrote such glowing reports of Princess Auguste of Hessen-Kassel that the Duke of Clarence was greatly amused, saying, 'He's in love with her himself. I'll write and tell him to take her, bless him!' And that is what happened: Adolphus, aged forty-four, married the not yet 21-year-old Auguste, on 7 May 1818. In March 1819, a son, George, was born, followed by Auguste in July 1822 and much later, in 1833, another daughter, Mary Adelaide.

Adolphus, although the most agreeable of George III's sons, was eccentric bordering sometimes on the disturbing, to the point of the Duke of Wellington proclaiming him 'as mad as Bedlam'. As a young man he read a lot, was interested in science, loved music, and played the violin expertly.

They spent many years in Hannover. When his son was still young, he caught scarlet fever and the doctors, fearing he might die, sent for the Duke of Cambridge. In his frenzy while attending a dinner, the Duke took a bottle of Steinberger Rhine wine to the boy's bedroom and forced him to drink a glass. The boy improved and for many years Steinberger wine was drunk on young George's birthday.

In 1837 King William IV died, which separated Great Britain from Hannover. Victoria became Queen of Great Britain and her uncle, Ernest Augustus, King of Hannover, which made the Duke of Cambridge's position redundant. Consequently, he and his family returned to England to reside at Cambridge House, Piccadilly.

To his great disappointment, his son did not marry Queen Victoria but the ineligible Louisa Fairbrother, rumoured to be the mother of two illegitimate children. Louisa was never accepted in the family and went through life as Mrs. FitzGeorge.

In June 1850, the 76-year-old Duke had a violent stomach attack which left him exhausted. From then on he began to decline; so his son, in military service, came back to be with his father. According to his son, he died quite unexpectedly, calmly and quietly. His youngest daughter, Mary, had been with him, but Princess Auguste, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, arrived seven hours after he had died."4

Auguste Wilhelmine Luise (?) Princess von Hesse-Kassel was born on 25 July 1797 at Schloß Rumpenheim, Germany (now).1,3,2,4 She married Adolphus Frederick (?) Pr of Gr Britain, Ireland and Hannover, 1st Duke of Cambridge, son of George III (?) King of Great Britain, Ireland and Hannover and Charlotte Sophie (?) Dss von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, on 7 May 1818 at Kassel, Germany (now),

Auguste Wilhelmine Luise (?) Princess von Hesse-Kassel died on 6 April 1889 at St. Jame's Palace, London, City of London, Greater London, England, at age 91.1,3,2,4
; per Leo van de Pas: "A great-grandchild of King George II, she was interested in politics and the theatre. She also enjoyed music and had a beautiful soprano voice. Her education had been conservative, and her dignified and austere manner was lightened by her sense of humour. However, as an old lady she was forbidding and terrifying, even though a lady-in-waiting described her as 'a Duck of a Duchess! I never met with anyone with whom it is so easy to get on'. Always punctual, she was kind and gracious to those around her; and methodical, she ran an ordered household.

Frequently she attended the sittings of the House of Lords and never missed reading her daily paper. With her husband they brought their children up in Hannover, where they remained until 1837.

She disliked Prince Albert, the Prince Consort, because 'he had taken Queen Victoria' from her own son. And Prince Albert disliked the Cambridges influence over his son, the Prince of Wales. However, she was well pleased with the marriage of the Prince of Wales to Princess Alexandra of Denmark, as Alexandra was her own great-niece.

It was also the Prince of Wales who was instrumental in bringing the Duke of Teck to England, who subsequently married her youngest daughter, 'Fat Mary'.

Toward the end of 1888 she became ill and died on 6 April 1889 aged ninety-two. Queen Victoria attended her funeral, the only one she did attend until that of her son, Prince Leopold."4

Anton Ulric (?) Duke von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel was born on 4 October 1633 at Hitzacker, Germany (now).2 He married Elisabeth Juliane (?) Pss of Holstein-Norburg on 17 August 1656 at Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), Germany (now).6,2,3,7

Anton Ulric (?) Duke von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel died on 27 March 1714 at Salzdahlum, Germany (now), at age 80.1,2
      ; [2m.] Duke Anton Ulrich of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1666-1714), *Hitzacker 4.10.1633, +Salzdahlum 27.3.1714; m.Wolfenbüttel 17.8.1656 Pss Elisabeth Juliane of Holstein-Norburg (*Norburg 24.5.1634, +4.2.1704.)2

; Anton Ulrich belonged to the senior though less important branch of the Brunswick family. He was a man of many talents and his novel, 'The Roman Octavia', which the Duchess of Orléans said was as long as the bible only not so well written, appeared in instalments. To house his art collection he built gallery after gallery.

In January 1712 Leibnitz advised all to look east: 'Peter the Great is someone who will make a great noise in the world. He will be a Grand Turk of the North. He means to be Alexander the Great at the very least.' Having listened, Anton Ulrich shocked Europe when he announced the betrothal of one of his grand-daughters to the Tsarevitch. Never, said the Prussian King, would he dream of sending a child into that barbaric country.

Anton Ulrich kept his cousin, the Electress of Hanover, informed and told her that the bride had at first been put off by her groom's shaggy mane and common expression. However, things were looking up he was having his hair curled and powdered, taking dancing lessons, and studying the customs of the west.

In Salzdahlum he owned a 'château' which he liked to think of as a second Versailles. However, while marrying off his grand-daughters to Tsars and Emperors, he was writing his novel and spent much time in this house and the garden with its pagoda hung with bells that chimed in the wind. Here he had a collection of much admired portraits, except for that of Queen Christine as it looked less than lifelike. The reason which Anton Ulrich gave for this was that it had been painted while she was lying in state.

Anton Ulrich failed to finish his ten-volume novel as he died on 27 March 1714. The loss of his overfed pug 'Mops' had been too much for the old man to bear and, while dying, Lutheran and Catholic clergymen were fighting over his soul across his bed. Always fanatical on points of detail, he had left precise instructions down to the tying of his cravat for the lying-in-state; and as soon as he was dead, a messenger went to France with his apologies to the Duchess of Orléans for leaving his book unfinished, together with an outline of how it would have ended had he had the time to write it.3
