"Memorial issued by Uwchlan Monthly Meeting of Friends, concerning Elhanan Zook, who departed this life on the first day of 10th month of 1911
"As a testimony the faithful and consistent life of our beloved, aged friend and elder Elhanan Zook, we desire to place on record the following memorial.
"Elhanan Zook was born at Exton, Chester County, Pennsylvania on the 17th day of 3rd month 1819. His parents were John and Elizabeth Zook, members with the Mennonites, who ancestors emigrated [sic] to this county in the 17th cent. Both father and mother were regular attenders of Friends Meetings most of their married life but never became members. Elhanan Zook, being convinced of the Principles of the Society of Friends, asked to be received into membership with Uwchlan Monthly Meeting in 1845, residing within its limits the remainder of his life. He was appointed an Elder in 1868, and was also a member of the Meeting for Sufferings.
"He married Sarah Downing Trimble, 3rd month 11th 1847. His early married life was spent at the old Trimble Homestead in West Whiteland, Chester County. Then buying a farm in Uwchlan, but having no convenient school for his children, he sold it after two years and bought a small place on the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike near Whitford. Here engaged in the coal and lumber business at Exton with his youngest brother. This he continued seven years, but desiring home employment for hi children, bought a farm in Caln Township - the homestead of his wife's ancestors - where he lived and farmed successfully for forty-three years and where his family grew up.
"In the years 1868, 69 and 70 he travelled as companion to his much beloved friend, William U. Ditzler, through the Meetings of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, also visiting prisions [sic] and almshouses in both states. On the 19th day of 10th month 1898 he lost his devoted wife suddenly, a shock from which he never fully recovered.
"In 1907 he sold his farm and retired with his two single daughters to Downingtown. His house was ever open to the stranger, especially to those of our beloved society, where they not only found a home, but ready help in any concern which might be theirs.
"Elhanan Zook made it a rule of his life to let nothing, however urgent, prevent his attendance at Divine Worship. In the Meetings for business his good judgment was appealed to and valued in the affairs connected with society. He was one to whom the neighbors came with their differences and difficulties, and we never heard of a single instance where he failed to effect a peaceful settlement. Having been a man of active habits, even in his advanced age it was his custom to take daily walks; on these occasions his peaceful face and kindly manner endeared him alike to young and old.
"In the 5th month 1910 Elhanan Zook fell and broke his hip, from which he recovered after a long and painful confinement, persevering until he was again able to walk, though past 91 years of age.
"He last attended Meeting the 19th of 9th month 1911. The day being chilly and damp, he took cold and died the 1st day of 10th month 1911, being confined to his room about two weeks waiting patiently for the final summons.
"It was said of him, 'The weight of Elhanan Zooks character as a true and firm believer in all truth as it is in Jesus, was so fully recognized by his friends, that he could be relied on as a supporter of any right measures for the furtherance of pure religion. His presence in our religious assemblies was felt, rather than his speech heard, in open advocacy of movements to advance the cause of righteousness which lay so near to his souls affections.'
[handwritten postscript]
"'Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile' - added as a testimony by Phila' Yearly Meeting, at its session 6th day 4mo. 1912 when the foregoing was read."
