     Jasper LillardLollard married (?) Isaacs.1
Jasper LillardLollard was born in 1615 at France.
; Jean (John) Lillard (abt 1668-1732)is one of two brothers who immigrated to the USA, from France (possibly Wales, per a second researcher)approximately 1685-6.

Earliest records indicate that a Thomas LOLLARD (b abt 1390- ??) joined in the invasion of France by Henry V, in 1415. Among other battles, there was an important one on Oct 25, 1415 in northern France at Agincourt (near Calais), in which this Thomas LOLLARD was knighted for gallant bravery in battle. It is reported that some 1,600 Englishmen and 10,000 French were killed in this one battle. There were many more battles in northern France before a Treaty of Troyes was signed May 21, 1420.

During this period of time, Sir Thomas Lollard is supposed to have met a French Lady of gentle birth with whom a romance started. She was from the province of Touraine; the romance culminated in a marriage (perhaps about 1420), resulting in Sir Thomas staying in Touraine when King Henry V made his triumphal return to England. He also changed his name to LILLARD.

There is also a version of the story saying that the original was LILLIARD, so that only the "I" had to be dropped from the name. This based on the facts of Scottish history having 16th century LILLIARD family names involving folk heroes and messengers to the Queen.
----------------------------
Within the "modern" family itself, there is another version saying "the two brothers (John and Benjamin) came from Wales to Virginia, bearing the name of LOLLARD....and that there are Lollards of Wales still living...on large estates and of high station; there also are many Lillards still living in the south of France, who were formerly called Lollards." But these are "second hand" stories of origin and may be suspect for accuracy.

So there are different derivations of the family specific geographic origin and the surname spelling, but all feel "England" produced the family. The most exhaustive research was done for the reference "b" book, which favors the surname evolution of Lollard to Lillard, and the England to France to USA logic.

In the 1920's, there was another (the only other one known) family of Lillards in the USA, living in Tangagipano, Louisiana. They came from the Bayonne, France area and "that there is some of the family still living today .... near Marseilles and Lyons. [while the author was visiting France, there was an] account of the graduating exercises at St Cyr, where one Lieutenant Hypolite Lillard of France was the first in his class."
------------------------------------
Sir Thomas and family lived on the Loire River, near the town of Saumur. Speculation only could yield the number of generations which existed between Sir Thomas and the next known family member, a Jasper Lillard (abt 1620-??), who lived on the Loire River near Angers, France approximately 200 years later.

Jasper was a vine grower and also owned/operated a line of boats on the Loire River, from Angers to Nantes, and from Angers to Tours. Jasper prospered and married a Miss Isaacs in about 1645; she must have been an extraordinary woman, as she gave up her religion to marry Jasper who was an avowed Huguenot. From this marriage was born at least five sons:
-Jean Lillard
-Benjamin L.
-Moise L. [b. abt 1650]
-Joseph L.
-David L.
-others who are unknown??

Moise L. remained with his parents, assisting in the cultivation of the vine- yards/making of wine, and in the boat line business. He was a Huguenot, as was his father. At the death of Jasper Lillard, Moise succeeded his father in the ownership of the boat line, which he later passed on to his eldest son, Moise II. The boat line had been in business for over 100 years when all communication between this family and the Virginia family broke off in 1759, as a result of Virginia troops fighting Wolfe at Quebec, against the French. It is reported by Old Squire Lillard that Captain Benjamin [1739-~1828] "re-commenced communications" and that these letters...."were in the possession of the descendants of Mildred Leighton (Layton) in Ohio".

Moise I, the equivalent in English of Moses, also prospered and bought a small vineyard near his parents. He then married (abt 1667) Lilli Balssa/Balsa/ Balsas (b. abt 1650); she was the great aunt of Honore de Balzac, the French novelist. Children issued from this marriage were:
-Moise Lillard II b. abt 1667
-Jean (John) b. abt 1668
-Benjamin b. abt 1670
-others ??

A historical perspective now is desirable. In 1598, King Henry IV of France issued an edict at Nantes, which secured to the Huguenots the freedom of conscience as well as equal rights, with the Roman Catholics. There were many following acts pertaining to these rights, but finally there appeared in 1685 the Edict of Nantes, which rescinded the privileges of Huguenots. Some examples of this were: public worship was forbidden, ministers had to leave, lay Protestants were forbidden to follow them, marriages were null, churches were burned, children might be taken from parents, etc. It was no longer safe for Huguenots to live in France. In spite of strict enforcement, half a million Huguenots left the country carrying their wealth and their art, skills, and manufacturing secrets. The hotbed of all this activity was the area in which the Lillards lived.

Moise had sold out his vineyards near Angers and moved his family to Nantes. Here he again owned a vineyard, in addition to operating the boat line. In view of the political climate, apparently it was decided that the oldest son Moise II would stay with parents and the youngest two sons (Jean and Benjamin Lillard), who were still minors and in grave personal danger, would be better off going to America; secretly, this is what they did, emigrating and settling in Virginia. With the exception of the French Lillard family, all of the Lillards across America are descendants of this late 17th century emigration.

Jean (John) and Benjamin (abt 1670-abt 1698) emigrated from Nantes, France about 1685-6, to the Richmond, VA area. About 1700 they moved to the James River area in VA., where they resided for some time. While here, it is written that one day Benjamin went out to the river, took off his clothes to bathe, went into the water and was drowned. This left Jean as the only surviving member of this Lillard family, in America.

The first authenticated knowledge of Jean in America is that he had his name Anglicized to John, in 1700. It was also during that year that he married a Mildred Jones, who was a relative of the Monroe family which later produced the fifth president of the US, James Monroe.

John married Mildred Jones (b. abt 1675-d. abt 1720) in 1700 in VA and they soon moved to Manassas, VA. Children of this marriage were:
-Benjamin b abt 1701
-other sons who died in infancy
-daughters of whom there are no records

John's second marriage, in about 1725, was to Martha Littlejohn (b. abt 1692- d. Feb., 1734 in Prince William Co., VA); they had a daughter:
-Sarah Lillard b. abt 1727 [of whom we know no more]
------------------------
As documented in reference sources, many famous names can and will be associated with the family Lillard. Some these, to date, include:
-the Scottish heroine Maiden Lilliard, who fought valiantly in a 1544 battle.
-a knight in the British Army, Sir Thomas Lollard.
-ancestry of James Monroe, a US president.
-by marriage, Honore de Balzac

Later generations will produce many important marriages, officers in the Army of the United States, judges, lawyers, publishers, etc., etc..

The second older male (aged 30-39) could be Isaiah's son, John Alexander, but he was married by this time and his wife doesn't appear here, so Isaiah must have had another son about his age. The males (other than Isaiah) could represent a widowed son and his children and Isaiah's son, Cortes.

Albert Gallatin Hart was buried on 3 September 1884 at Lea Cemetery, Center View, Johnson Co., Missouri, USA; from Find A Grave website:
Birth:      Apr. 5, 1824, Franklin County, Missouri, USA
     Death:      Aug. 17, 1884
Albert Gallatin Hart was born 5 April 1824 in St. Johns Township, Franklin Co., Missouri, the son of Armstrong Hart (1775-1829) and Nancy (Todd) Murphy Hart (1790-1870+). Albert married Catherine McKeehan, who was born 28 September 1825 in Tennessee, died 25 July 1884 in Johnson Co., Missouri, and is also buried at Lea Cemetery. Their known children were:
     --Samuel A. Hart, b. 1849
     --Nancy A. Hart, born 1851
--Maria Jane Hart, born 1853, died 1947
--Orilla Alice Hart, born 1856, died 1938
     --John J. Hart, born 1858
--Jesse L. Hart, born 1859, died 1934, buried Lea Cemetery
     --Francis Hart, born 1863
     --Eugene Hart, born 1870
I do not know whether the other three Hart infants buried at Lea Cemetery are also children of Albert Gallatin and Catherine (McKeehan) Hart or not, but they may well be, especially if their grave markers are in close proximity to those of Albert and Catherine Hart. It may well be that the child I show as Eugene was the same as the child named Aaron. I have calculated the birth dates of the three unidentified infants buried at Lea Cemetery as follows:
     --Mary M. Hart, born 7 June 1861, died 7 April 1862
     --Lillie E. Hart, born 6 May 1868, died 23 March 1868
--Aaron Hart, born 24 October 1869, died 11 May 1871
If these three infant graves are close to the other graves, I'd be very tempted to show them as children of Albert and Catherine. I've checked census records for the other Hart families in Johnson Co. in 1860 and 1870, and I cannot find any other parents who would match these infants.

In Armstrong Hart Esq.'s will dated 26 November 1829 at Franklin Co., Missouri, USA, Albert Gallatin Hart was named as an heir; Franklin Co., MO, Will Book A, Pages 66-70:
In the name of God Amen I Armstrong Hart of the County of Franklin in the State of Missouri, being in a low state of health and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die and believing it very probable that the disease under which I now labor will prove fatal, but feeling assured that my mind is unimpaired and that I now possess a disposing memory, I do make the following my last will and testament.

First: I wish that my body should receive at the hands of my friends and executors a decent burial.

Secondly: It is my wish that all my just debts be paid and for that purpose it is my will that my executors sell at private or public sale as they may find most expedient so much of my personal estate as will raise a sum sufficient to pay them. If, however, my executors should think it would be more to the advantage of my estate to pay my debts out of the rents that may be coming to me from the letting of my interest in the grist and saw mills which I now own, then it is my will that my debts be so paid and my personal property be disposed of as hereinafter mentioned. If my executors should settle my debts out of the rents of the mills, then it is my wish that my wife take and keep during her widowhood the whole of my personal estate to be by her used for the support and maintenance of the family, and if my executors should sell a part of my personal estate, then it is my will that the remaining part and the rents of my mills be given to my wife so long as she remains single to be used by her as aforesaid. It is my desire that my wife remain on the plantation where I now live and cultivate the farm, but if in her opinion and in the opinion of my executors it would be more to her interest that the farm and ferry should be leased, together with the negro man Paul, then it is my will that they be let out and the profits be given to my wife for the support of the family. My wife received out of the estate of Isaac Murphy at the appraised value the negro man named Paul that is now in the family. Whether by the laws of the country this negro is my property, I am not advised. If it should so turn out that he is not mine and those who have now or should hereafter have the management of said Isaac Murphy's estate should claim off of my estate the hire of said negro, then in that case I wish my executors to charge the estate of said Murphy with the raising and schooling of the heirs of said Murphy. If my wife should think proper to marry again, I wish for my executors then to dispose of all the personal property, after she has taken her share, and the amount raised by such sale and the hire of my negro girl Louisa and the rent of my mills to be then applied to the schooling and maintenance of my three sons, Albert, Epenetus and Joseph. After my three sons are raised and become of age, I will to them and my four daughters in New York, to wit, Maria, Eliza, Emmy and Susan Ann, my interest in the tract of land upon which my mills are built and my interest in those mills, my negro girl named Louisa and her increase, the negro man Paul (if he should be my property) and indeed all and every thing that may at that day be a part of my estate. It is my desire, however, that my girls should receive their shares of my estate at an earlier period than the time before mentioned, and if my executors after a lapse of some three or four years after my decease should be enabled to make an estimate of my estate and should find that it will [not] injure the estate to sell so much thereof as will pay them their shares, it is then my will it be so arranged.
I constitute and appoint Bennoni Sappington and William G. Owens executors to this my last will and testament. In testimony of all which I hereunto set my hand and seal the twenty-sixth of November in the year 1829.
Signed and acknowledged in the presence of B. Sappington and Isaiah Todd
